Life and Debt by Stephanie Black( Visual )

21 editions published between 2001 and 2013 in English and held by 1,329 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This documentary examines the effects of World Bank and the International Monetary Fund loans on the infrastructure Jamaica established in the wake of independence from the UK in 1962. Seven billion in debt (circa 2000), Jamaica has seen its agricultural industries laid to waste by the impossibility of competing with subsidized, multi-national American based companies. The poverty of an 'average' Jamaican in a shantytown near Kingston is in stark contrast to the luxurious tropical fantasy paradise experienced by tourists in posh Montego Bay. In a dog-eat-dog global economy, the US and its multinational corporate clients have all the advantages, while Jamaica has no agriculture, no industry, and no tax base--only ever-growing debt

Jamaica : struggle in the periphery by Michael Manley( Book )

15 editions published between 1981 and 1983 in 3 languages and held by 482 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book boldly tackles the North-South dilemma. Between 1972 and 1980, with Michael Manley as its Prime Minister, Jamaica attempted to establish a democratic welfare state in the North American periphery. Steering a course between the Cuban revolutionary model and the Puerto Rican model of total dependence on the U.S., Jamaica was subject to harrowing economic and political pressure from the giant to the north. Pressure might be too polite a word. Many would say Jamaica was the victim of a deliberate policy of destabilisation of the kind familiar to the world from Allende's Chile to Nicaragua and El Salvador"--Back cover

Gangsta chic, violence and nihilism, the hard edge of rap and reggae increasingly dominates the image of black popular culture. This film investigates the issues raised by the genre, such as ritualized machismo, misogyny, attitudes towards homosexuality and religion, and gun glorification. Filmed in dance halls, hip hop clubs, and using interviews and music video clips, film takes us to London, Jamaica and the U.S. to examine the "darker" side of contemporary black music

"The Anglo-Spanish War of 1585-1603 was, to most contemporary Englishmen, a conflict for the soul of the nation. To their descendants, the Armada campaign of 1588 - the most dramatic phase of the struggle - represented a watershed in European history comparable to Waterloo, the Marne or Dunkirk. Like those battles, its outcome both preserved English freedoms and halted the momentum of an ambitious and alien empire." "Yet the victorious nation had contributed much to the conflict. This book examines the process by which the Spaniard, a long-term ally and friend, became in English eyes the epitome of human depravity, and how resistance to his imagined goals helped shape an emerging sense of nationhood." "The Armada campaign pitted Europe's mightiest military power against Christendom's most powerful navy in a battle for different ideals of civilisation. Both protagonists expected the clash to be decisive; neither, as it soon became apparent, knew how to fight a battle whose scale and character were beyond the experience of anyone in the two fleets. What ensued was not the heroic encounter of legend, but an inconclusive affair, redeemed - for England - by atrocious weather and poor Spanish understanding of the coastlines of western Scotland and Ireland."--BOOK JACKET
