Literature and the Christian life by Sallie McFague( Book )

14 editions published between 1966 and 1974 in English and Undetermined and held by 920 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Carefully avoiding the contentions that religion can be found everywhere in literature and that literature is a tool of religion, this study argues that a legitimate and fruitful relationship between the two must be based on an adequate understanding of the nature and function of each. Literature, by presenting the subtleties of men's responses to every aspect of the world and their fellows, can aid the Christian faith by educating it to the complexities of human reality. The central point of contact between these disparate realms can be found principally within the Christian life, for the reader can in fact decide to put the learning about the world and man that he absorbs from his reading to work in his religiously committed existence. The proper function of literature cannot be to make men better, but insofar as it performs its own task well, it is relevant to the Christian, who needs the kind of wisdom it offers in order to become fully aware of the complexities of human life

Life abundant : rethinking theology and economy for a planet in peril by Sallie McFague( Book )

9 editions published between 2000 and 2008 in English and held by 566 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this work, Sallie McFague argues that responsible discipleship today entails disciplined religious reflection. Theology matters: without serious reflection on their worldview, ultimate commitments, and lifestyle, North American Christians cannot hope to help ensure the "good life" for all people and the planet. McFague has therefore written a primer in theology to help Christians assess their own religious story in light of the larger Christian tradition and the felt needs of the Earth. In lucid prose she offers creative discussions of how a planetary theology might approach our contemporary socioeconomic context and rethink classical topics of God and the world, Christ and salvation, and life in the Spirit."--Jacket
Super, natural Christians : how we should love nature by Sallie McFague( Book )

7 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 422 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Sallie McFague crafts a Christian spirituality centered on nature as the focus of our encounter with the divine. Reorienting our religious life from the "supernatural" to the "super, natural," she suggests, can help us "see these earth others ... as both subjects in themselves and as intimations of God." In discussions of city planning and wilderness, of photography, hiking, gardening, recycling, urban decay, and poverty, but also of incarnation, embodiment, and sacramentality, McFague urges the reader's conversion from "the arrogant eye" to "the loving eye." She suggests many ways people can cultivate encounters with nature and engagement in justice
A new climate for theology : God, the world, and global warming by Sallie McFague( Book )

12 editions published between 2008 and 2009 in English and Korean and held by 405 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

At heart, McFague argues, global warming occurs because we lack an appropriate understanding of ourselves as inextricably bound to the planet and its systems. This book not only traces the notion of unlimited desire that fuels our market system, it also paints an alternative idea of what being human means

Blessed are the consumers : climate change and the practice of restraint by Sallie McFague( Book )

5 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 180 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this timely book, McFague recalls her readers to the practices of restraint. In a world bent on consumption it is imperative that people of religious faith realize the significant role they play in advocating for the earth, and a more humane life for all. The root of restraint, she argues, rests in the ancient Christian notion of kenosis, or self-emptying. By introducing kenosis through the life stories of John Woolman, Simone Weil, and Dorothy Day, McFague brings a powerful theological concept to bear in a winsome and readable way
