The first settlement of pilgrims in Plymouth were saved from starvation and disease by the well-traveled and multilingual Native American Tisquantum, or Squanto, and as long as he lived the tensions between the struggling colony and the surrounding tribes were kept at bay. After his death, the poor diplomacy and lack of communication between the Indians and English resulted in hostile actions on the part of the pilgrims. English leader Myles Standish initiated the bloodshed that ultimately led to King Philip's War and the "final elimination of the Indians from the land of their fathers."
