11 editions published between 1969 and 1973 in English and held by 548 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The 59 readings in this collection are grouped into eight chapters: (1) introduction, (2) language learning and linguistics, (3) listening and speaking, (4) literature and creative writing, (5) words and their use, (6) spelling and handwriting, (7) curriculum topics and resources, and (8) evaluation of language learnings. Final readings were chosen with particular attention given to writings since 1960 and were organized into categories on the basis of content and the approach of the article. Topics emphasized include applications from the study of language and the 'new' English; influences of cultural variations; creative writing, especially in primary grades; new trends, materials, and resources; and a few controversial topics. Types of articles are explanations, reports of research, how-to-do-it descriptions, historical surveys, exhortations, points of view, and in-depth explorations. Short chapter introductions provide summaries of the main sections, and article introductions offer questions and opposing viewpoints. Selected references (grouped by chapter) and indexes are provided. (Lh)

Language arts concepts for elementary school teachers by Paul Clay Burns( Book )

An anthology of literature on elementary school language arts concepts is presented. Its purpose is to provide specific content that may help prospective and practicing teachers to recognize the role of language content in teaching. The anthology is divided into seven parts. Part One presents a general picture of the language arts curriculum that is informative and that sets the stage and tone for the remainder of the book. Part Two provides the teacher with basic information about language. The articles in Part Three provide a beginning study of such topics as (1) language in the school, (2) sequence of language development, (3) theories of language acquisition, (4) impact of environmental influences on language development and differences, and (5) language pathology. The articles in Part Four provide background information that will promote better understanding of the newer content of elementary school language arts materials and greater ease in reading contemporary professional journals. Part Five contains several articles detailing the basics of interesting children's literature. The articles in Part Six deal with effective listening and oral communication. Part Seven contains articles dealing with the teaching additional communication skills in English. (Author/CK)

To further this end, each chapter contains materials, models, and techniques designed to implement diagnostic teaching in the language arts program. The seven chapters are "Foundations for Diagnostic Teaching," which discusses the diagnostic point of view and suggests basic diagnostic teaching procedures; "Language Tests," which analyzes the uses and limitations of standardized language tests and other testing devices; "Listening," which includes an evaluation of listening disabilities and a checklist of problems; "Oral Communication," which discusses diagnosis of pronunciation, articulation, and usage problems; "Written Communication," which evaluates pupil writing; "Spelling," which discusses causes of spelling deficiencies and strategies for treatment; and "Handwriting," which explores different handwriting styles, common errors, and difficulties involved in learning, and includes diagnostic teaching strategies to improve handwriting.
