Ethical leadership by Robert J Starratt( Book )

8 editions published between 2004 and 2005 in English and Swedish and held by 503 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Starratt explains that educational leadership requires a moral commitment to high quality learning for all students - a commitment based on three essential virtues: proactive responsibility, personal and professional authenticity, and an affirming, critical, and enabling presence to the workers and the work involved in teaching and learning. He clarifies how essential these virtues are for leadership in the pressure-cooker of high-stakes schooling. He provides a vivid illustration in the story of a principal who struggles to do the right thing for his students and teachers, as they are pressured - and often punished - by state mandated tests. Starratt concludes by offering practical suggestions for aspiring and working leaders."--Jacket

Building an ethical school : a practical response to the moral crisis in schools by Robert J Starratt( Book )

15 editions published between 1994 and 1998 in English and held by 383 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book argues for much greater attention to ethical education and responds to skeptics who doubt its accomplishment in a pluralistic, secular society that is badly fragmented over values. The book seeks themes that unite rather than divide and provides a conceptual foundation for ethical education, broad enough for building consensus among teachers and parents, yet focused enough to provide guidance for highly specific learning activities. The second half of the book presents a series of steps by which a school community might proceed in building an ethical school. Chapter 1 examines and counters the objections to building an ethical school. Chapter 2 identifies patterns of school life that mitigate against a concern for nurturing ethical dispositions. The foundational qualities of an ethical person are described in the third chapter. Chapter 4 develops a multidimensional ethical framework based on the three areas of caring, justice, and criticism. A comprehensive picture of a school that fosters ethical practice and understanding is presented in the fifth chapter. Chapters 6 through 8 offer suggestions for launching the program for building an ethical school, designing the plan, and implementing the plan. The final chapter describes realities presented by students, teachers, the institution, and the nature of ethical life itself. Despite these challenges, it is argued that ethical education is a lifelong, worthy process. Sixteen figures are included. Appendices contain a list of selected resources and an annotated bibliography. (Lmi)

The drama of leadership by Robert J Starratt( Book )

16 editions published between 1993 and 2003 in English and Undetermined and held by 307 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book reviews recent developments in the study and theory of leadership and explores new applications. It examines the questions that structuration theory raises for leadership, explores the theory of charisma and critical theory as posing new challenges to the understanding of leadership, and describes the uses of postmodernist theory for a new theory of leadership--a theory informed by theories of drama. The book views leaders as active players in a drama of human survival and fulfillment in a world threatened by irrationality and uncertainty. The leader is viewed as playing the part of director, coach, script writer, player, and critic in the developmental dynamic of institutional life. Proposals for the continuing education of leaders are offered. Three tables, three figures, and an index are included. (Lmi)
Centering educational administration : cultivating meaning, community, responsibility by Robert J Starratt( Book )

11 editions published between 2003 and 2009 in English and held by 243 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Starratt enters the national conversation among educational administration scholars and practitioners about what constitutes the core of their knowledge and practice. In Part I, he develops three main themes--cultivating meaning, community, and moral responsibility--which he then positions against national themes about the core of educational administration: school improvement, democratic community, and social justice. Rather than focusing on the routine managerial tasks normally associated with school administration (budgeting, personnel and legal problems, time and resource management, etc.), this text asks aspiring school leaders to reflect first on the underlying philosophical and sociological perspectives that constitute the substance of administrative work in education
Cultivating an ethical school by Robert J Starratt( Book )

10 editions published in 2012 in English and Undetermined and held by 240 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Often the school is left as an institution seemingly ethically neutral, leaving untouched questions about whether the school itself is a site of injustice toward both educators and children. Springing from his well-known "Building an Ethical School", Robert J. Starratt now looks more closely at the educational leader's responsibility to ensure that the whole fabric of the educational process reflects an ethical philosophy of education. Starratt argues that the work of educating young people is by its very nature an ethical work as well as an intellectual work, and that this work inescapably engages educators and their pupils with an academic curriculum, a social curriculum, and a civic curriculum. "Cultivating an Ethical School" lays a foundation for educators seeking to cultivate a comprehensive ethical educating environment. The second half of the book then takes up the more specific perspectives on teaching and learning that constitute the heart of cultivating an ethical school. Starratt provides examples of how an ethical school can expose students to a variety of perspectives on the challenges they will be called upon to face in the worlds of culture, nature, and society. This valuable book shows leaders and educators the importance of organizing a curriculum and a pedagogy that simultaneously respects and cultivates the intellectual, personal, and social qualities of being human"--Provided by publisher
