A large-area gamma-ray imaging telescope system by David G Koch( Book )

2 editions published in 1983 in English and held by 66 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The concept definition of using the External Tank (ET) of the Space Shuttle as the basis for constructing a large area gamma ray imaging telescope in space is detailed. The telescope will be used to locate and study cosmic sources of gamma rays of energy greater than 100 MeV. Both the telescope properties and the means whereby an ET is used for this purpose are described. A parallel is drawn between those systems that would be common to both a Space Station and this ET application. In addition, those systems necessary for support of the telescope can form the basis for using the ET as part of the Space Station. The major conclusions of this concept definition are that the ET is ideal for making into a gamma ray telescope, and that this telescope will provide a substantial increase in collecting area."--NTIS abstracts
Data analysis and theoretical studies for Atmospheric Explorer C, D and E by A Dalgarno( Book )

2 editions published in 1983 in English and held by 65 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The research concentrated on construction of a comprehensive model of the chemistry of the ionosphere. It proceeded by comparing detailed predictions of the atmospheric parameters observed by the instrumentation on board the Atmospheric Explorer Satellites with the measured values and modifying the chemistry to bring about consistency. Full account was taken of laboratory measurements of the processes identified as important. The research programs were made available to the AE team members. Regularly updated tables of recommended values of photoionization cross sections and electron impact excitation and ionization cross sections were provided. The research did indeed lead to a chemistry model in which the main pathways are quantitatively secure. The accuracy was sufficient that remaining differences are small."--Abstract
A study of a space-station-associated multiple spacecraft Michelson spatial interferometer by Robert Stachnik( Book )

2 editions published in 1983 in English and held by 63 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"One approach to Michelson spatial interferometry at optical wavelengths involves use of an array of spacecraft in which two widely-separated telescopes collect light from a star and direct it to a third, centrally-located, device which combines the beams in order to detect and measure interference fringes. The original version of a spacecraft array for Michelson spatial interferometry (SAMSI) was modified so that the system uses the fuel resupply capability of a space station. The combination of this fuel resupply capability with a method of obtaining image Fourier transform phase information, necessary for full image reconstruction, permits SAMSI to be used to synthesize images equivalent to those produced by huge apertures in space. Synthesis of apertures in the 100 to 500 meter range is discussed. Reconstruction can be performed to a visual magnitude of at least 8 for a 100 A passband in 9 hours. Data are simultaneously collected for image generation from 0.1 micron to 18 microns. In the one-dimensional mode, measurements can be made every 90 minutes (including acquisition and repointing time) for objects as faint as 19th magnitude in the visible."--NTIS abstract
