8 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in French and held by 59 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

2 editions published between 1998 and 2001 in Spanish and French and held by 52 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

2 editions published in 1997 in French and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

IN THE SOUTHWEST OF BOLIVIA AND THE ANDEAN NORTHERN-CENTRAL PART OF PERU, THEATRICAL SHOWS, ORGANIZED AND PLAYED BY THE LOCAL POPULATIONS ON THE OCCASION OF THE PATRON SAINT'S NAME DAY, REPRESENT THE ARRIVAL OF THE SPANIARDS IN PERU AND THE CAPTURE AND EXECUTION OF THE INCA RULER ATAWALLPA. SOME FIFTEEN VERSIONS, EXTRACTED FROM THE MANUSCRIPT NOTEBOOKS HANDED DOWN INSIDE THE RURAL COMMUNITIES, HAVE NOW BEEN PUBLISHED. THE MAJORITY ARE BILINGUAL (QUECHUA-SPANISH). A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS, USING A MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH ASSOCIATING HISTORY, ANTHROPOLOGY, LINGUISTICS, STYLISTICS AND DRAMATOLOGY, ALLOWS US TO AFFIRM THE COMMON ORIGIN OF THE PERUVIAN AND BOLIVIAN VERSIONS AND TO DATE THE BIRTH OF THE TRADITION BACK TO THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY. THIS TEXTUAL ANALYSIS IS FOLLOWED BY A REGRESSIVE CHRONOLOGICAL EXAMINATION OF THE HISTORICAL SOURCES WHICH MENTION ATAWALLPA'S DEATH. AMONG THESE, THE TESTIMONIES OF THE POTOSI CREOLE BARTOLOME ARZANS DE ORSUA Y VELA (EIGHTEENTH CENTURY) AND THE NATIVE CHRONICLER FELIPE WAMAN PUMA DE AYALA (SIXTEENTH-SEVENTEENTH CENTURIES) STAND OUT. THE STUDY OF THESE SOURCES CONFIRMS THE TEXTUAL ANALYSIS AND REFUTES THE ROLE OF ANY EUROPEAN INFLUENCE (MISSIONARY THEATRE, SHOWS OF MOROS Y CRISTIANOS) IN THE GENESIS OF THE ATAWALLPA CYCLE. APPEARING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY IN THE NEO-INCA KINGDOM OF VILCABAMBA, THE ATAWALLPA CYCLE WAS THE HEIR TO A THEATRICAL TRADITION WHICH FLOURISHED IN PRE-HISPANIC PERU
