Philosophy in history : essays on the historiography of philosophy by Richard Rorty( Book )

33 editions published between 1984 and 2014 in English and held by 1,009 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The sixteen essays in this volume confront the current debate about the relationship between philosophy and its history. On the one hand intellectual historians commonly accuse philosophers of writing bad - anachronistic - history of philosophy, and on the other, philosophers have accused intellectual historians of writing bad - antiquarian - history of philosophy. The essays here address this controversy and ask what purpose the history of philosophy should serve. Part I contains more purely theoretical and methodological discussion, of such questions as whether there are 'timeless' philosophical problems, whether the issues of one epoch are commensurable with those of another, and what style is appropriate to the historiography of the subject. The essays in Part II consider a number of case-histories. They present important revisionist scholarship and original contributions on topics drawn from ancient, early modern and more recent philosophy. All the essays have been specially commissioned, and the contributors include many of the leading figures in the field. The volume as a whole will be of vital interest to everyone concerned with the study of philosophy and of its history
The invention of autonomy : a history of modern moral philosophy by J. B Schneewind( Book )

37 editions published between 1997 and 2014 in 4 languages and held by 927 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is the most comprehensive study ever written of the history of moral philosophy in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Its aim is to set Kant's still influential ethics in its historical context by showing in detail what the central questions in moral philosophy were for him and how he arrived at his own distinctive ethical views. In its range, its analyses of many philosophers not usually considered in histories of ethics, and its discussions of the interweaving of religious and political concerns with moral philosophy, this is an unprecedented account of the developments that led up to Kant's ethics. Extensive quotations allow the reader to understand the philosophy through the vocabularies that the philosophers themselves used

Moral philosophy from Montaigne to Kant : an anthology by J. B Schneewind( Book )

24 editions published between 1990 and 2010 in English and held by 704 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This anthology contains excerpts from some thirty-two important seventeenth- and eighteenth-century moral philosophers. Including a substantial introduction and extensive bibliographies, the anthology facilitates the study and teaching of early modern moral philosophy in its crucial formative period. In addition to well-known thinkers such as Hobbes, Hume, and Kant, there are excerpts from a wide range of philosophers never previously assembled in one text, such as Grotius, Pufendorf, Nicole, Clarke, Leibniz, Malebranche, Holbach, and Paley. Some of the writers, such as Crusius and Wolff, have never appeared in English before." "Originally issued as a two-volume edition in 1990, the anthology is now re-issued, with a new foreword by Professor Schneewind, as a one-volume anthology to serve as a companion to his highly successful history of modern ethics, The Invention of Autonomy. The anthology provides many of the sources discussed in The Invention of Autonomy and taken together the two volumes will be an invaluable resource for the teaching of the history of modern moral philosophy."--Jacket

Nussbaum, Brown University

Giving : Western ideas of philanthropy( Book )

7 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 263 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book takes up some of the unavoidable questions about charity. If we lived in a wholly just world, would there be any need for charity? Is there genuine altruism at work in philanthropy, or merely the interest of some individual or class? Is there any justification for saying that group self-help does not count as charity? Does charitable giving do more harm than good? Taken together, these varied perspectives on charity constitute a rich and provocative study of something crucial in how we see ourselves in connection with others

New essays on the history of autonomy : a collection honoring J.B. Schneewind( Book )

14 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 239 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Kantian autonomy is often thought to be independent of time and place, but J.B. Schneewind in his study, The Invention of Autonomy, has shown that there is much to be learned by setting Kant's moral philosophy in the context of the history of modern moral philosophy. The authors in the collection continue Schneewind's project by relating Kant's work to the historical context of his predecessors and to the empirical context of human agency. This will be a valuable resource for professionals and advanced students in philosophy, the history of ideas, and the history of political thought."--Jacket

La filosofía en la historia : ensayos de historiografía de la filosofía by Richard Rorty( Book )

5 editions published in 1990 in Spanish and Undetermined and held by 30 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The writings of John Stuart Mill have become the cornerstone of political liberalism. Collected for the first time in this volume are Mill's three seminal and most widely read works: On Liberty, The Subjection of Women, and Utilitarianism. A brilliant defense of individual rights versus the power of the state, On Liberty is essential reading for anyone interested in political thought and theory. As Bertrand Russell reflected, "On Liberty remains a classic ... the present world would be better than it is, if [Mill's] principles were more respected." This Modern Library Paperback Classics edition includes newly commissioned endnotes and commentary by Dale E. Miller, and an index. From the Trade Paperback edition
