J'Accuse, Gance's extraordinary breakthrough work, is a World War I drama considered to be one of the most technically advanced films of the era and the first major pacifist film. It was referred to by Gance as "A human cry against the bellicose din of armies." This seminal cinematic achievement stars Marise Dauvray as Edith, a young woman who is unhappily married to an older man, François (Séverin-Mars), but is actually in love with a young poet, Jean Diaz (Romuald Joubé). Both Jean and François end up on the front lines of World War I while Edith is captured by German forces and suffers atrocities at the hands of the soldiers. Gance contrasts individual human suffering with the larger horrors of war, depicted with stark realism. J'Accuse introduced such technical advances as rapid-cut editing and highly expressive camerawork and lighting. Gance, who had served briefly in the military, returned to active service in order to film real battle scenes to include in the project. The film became a huge international hit, prompting one journalist to write that if the film had been shown in every town in the world in 1913, war might have been averted. In the early 1920s, Gance revised the plot, titles, and editing for "peacetime" presentation. That had been the only version of the film available until now. Directed by Abel Gance

La roue = The wheel( Visual )

29 editions published between 1921 and 2008 in 4 languages and held by 386 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"I know that Creation is a Great Wheel which cannot move without crushing someone!"--Victor Hugo. With this quotation begins the story of widowed railroad engineer Sisif. He finds an infant girl in a train wreck, and realizing that her parents are dead, rescues her and decides to raise her as his daughter, Norma. His wife died in childbirth, and Norma will make a good companion for his son, Elie. Knowing nothing of Norma's true origins, Elie and Norma grow up having an unusually close relationship, stopped from developing any further by their belief they are siblings. Haunted by his actions and resultant guilt, Sisif is driven to drink, making him all the more susceptible to the scheming of his wealthy boss, De Hersan, who wants to marry Norma. Though Norma refuses Hersan at first, Sisif's dismissal from the railway forces her to accept, which destroys both men. Elie realizing that he could have had the love of his life all along--once the truth comes out--is especially tragic. This seminal film introduced many innovations in set design and construction, location shooting, cinematic graphic effects, and particularly rhythmic editing. Gance's technique was years ahead of its time and influenced filmmakers all over the world, as his technical mastery is always in the service of the story
Napoléon by Nelly Kaplan( Book )

24 editions published between 1927 and 1996 in 4 languages and held by 234 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abel Gance's great film Napoleon, as heroic in ambition as its subject, opened at the Opera de Paris in April 1927. It was the summation of the silent cinema, a remarkable feat of imagination, ingenuity and stamina. Years in the planning and months in production, the film astonished its audience with the boldness of its conception - not least at the moment when the screen expanded to reveal Gance's visionary invention of Polyvision, a wide-screen system thirty years ahead of its time. Yet Gance's triumph was to be short-lived. The American version, re-edited by MGM, was a disaster. The sheer length of the film, and its spectacular effects, produced problems for exhibitors. Gance never gave up trying to 'improve' it. In 1934 he added sound; in 1970 he was still editing
