One God one aim one destiny : African Nova Scotians in Cape Breton by Joan Weeks ( Book )
1 edition published in 2007 in English and held by 55 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The story of African settlement in Cape Breton was barely documented and on the verge of being lost. Then, in 2006, the African Nova Scotian community in Glace Bay decided to restore its derelict Universal Negro Improvement Association Hall. As part of that project, the community created a museum to recognize and celebrate the history of Blacks in Cape Breton." "Because so little is known about that history, the UNIA Cultural Museum decided to publish its research. With the help of the Centre for Cape Breton Studies at Cape Breton University and the Cape Breton County Economic Development Authority, this book was born. It begins with slaves and ends with a Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia. It tells stories that were all but lost from living memory, like the shocking Glace Bay race riot of 1918. Profits from this publication will be used to help operate the UNIA Cultural Museum."--BOOK JACKET

Vol. XI of the multivolume "Marcus Garvey and Universal Improvement Association Papers" documents the impact and spread of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) and African Communities League, the organization founded by Marcus Garvey in 1914 and led by him until his death in 1940. Volume XI is the first to focus on the Caribbean, where the UNIA was represented by more than 170 divisions and chapters. Revealing the connections between the major African-American social movement of the interwar era and the struggles of the Caribbean people for self-determination and independence, this volume includes letters, speeches, and writings of Caribbean Garveyites and their opponents, as well as writings and speeches by Garvey, newspaper articles, colonial correspondence and memoranda, and government investigative records
