Hegemony and socialist strategy : towards a radical democratic politics by Ernesto Laclau( Book )
84 editions published between 1985 and 2014 in 8 languages and held by 987 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Since its original publication fifteen years ago, this hugely influential book has been at the centre of much debate. The arguments and controversies it has been aroused are, furthermore, far from abating: the disintegration of the Soviet bloc, the emergence of new social and political identities linked to the transformation of late capitalism, and the crisis of a left-wing project whose essentialist underpinnings have increasingly come under fire have, if anything, made more relevant than ever the theoretical perspective that the book proposes. Moreover the political project of 'radical and plural democracy' that it advocates provides a much-needed antidote to the attempts to formulate a Third Way capable of overcoming the classical opposition between Left and Right. Updated with a new preface, this is a fundamental text for understanding the workings of hegemony and grasping the nature of contemporary social struggle and their significance for democratic theory
Contingency, hegemony, universality : contemporary dialogues on the left by Judith Butler( Book )
38 editions published between 2000 and 2014 in 8 languages and held by 624 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"What is the contemporary legacy of Gramsci's notion of hegemony? How can universality be reformulated now that its spurious versions have been so thoroughly criticized?" "In this ground-breaking project, Judith Butler, Ernesto Laclau and Slavoj Zizek engage in a dialogue on central questions of contemporary philosophy and politics. Their essays, organized as three contributions each that respond to one another, range over the Hegelian legacy in contemporary critical theory, the theoretical dilemmas of multiculturalism, the universalism-versus-particularism debate, the strategies of the left in a globalized economy, and the relative merits of post-structuralism and Lacanian psychoanalysis for a critical social theory." "While the rigour and intelligence with which Butler, Laclau and Zizek approach their work is as formidable as one would expect, Contingency, Hegemony, Universality benefits additionally from their clear sense of energy and enjoyment in a revealing and often unpredictable exchange. On populist reason by Ernesto Laclau( Book )
18 editions published between 2005 and 2007 in English and held by 340 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
What are the political logics explaining the spread of populist experiences in the contemporary world? What is involved in constructing the idea of the people? And how does this construction relate to other forms of political subjectivity -- classes, corporations and other forms of association? Laclau's analysis of populist experiences begins with a critique of current approaches to populism, illustrated by two essential cases: the formation of a popular identity in French Jacobinism, and the dissolution of such an identity in the aftermath of British Chartism. This is followed by a discussion of the classical theories of mass psychology -- by Le Bon, Tarde, Freud, etc. -- and of the role of the lumpenproletariat in Marx's work. Finally Laclau examines a series of historical examples of populism, drawn mainly from American, Canadian, Argentinian and Turkish experiences

Estado y política en América Latina by Norbert Lechner( Book )
16 editions published between 1981 and 2000 in Spanish and Undetermined and held by 104 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The rhetorical foundations of society by Ernesto Laclau( Book )
6 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 102 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The essays collected in this volume develop the theoretical perspective initiated in Laclau and Mouffe's classic "Hegemony and Socialist Strategy", taking it in three principal directions. First, this book explores the specificity of social antagonisms and answers the question "What is an antagonistic relation?"--an issue which has become increasingly crucial in our globalized world, where the proliferation of conflicts and points of rupture is eroding their links to the social subjects postulated by classical social analysis. This leads Laclau to a second line of questioning: What is the ontological terrain that allows us to understand the nature of social relations in our heterogeneous world?" This is a task he addresses with theoretical instruments drawn from analytical philosophy and from the phenomenological and structuralist traditions. Finally, central to the argument of the book is the basic role attributed to rhetorical tropes--metaphor, metonymy, catachresis--in shaping the "non-foundational" grounds of society"--
La raison populiste by Ernesto Laclau( Book )
5 editions published in 2008 in Italian and French and held by 73 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The sublime object of ideology by Slavoj Žižek( Book )
12 editions published between 1991 and 2011 in 4 languages and held by 19 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In this provocative and original work, Slavoj Zizek takes a look at the question of human agency in a postmodern world. From the sinking of the Titanic to Hitchcock's Rear Window, from the operas of Wagner to science fiction, from Alien to the Jewish Joke, the author's acute analyses explore the ideological fantasies of wholeness and exclusion which make up human society. Linking key psychoanalytical and philosophical concepts to social phenomena such as totalitarianism and racism, the book explores the political significance of these fantasies of control. In so doing, The Sublime Object of Ideology represents a powerful contribution to a psychoanalytical theory of ideology, as well as offering persuasive interpretations of a number of contemporary cultural formations. -- Back cover
