Media effects : advances in theory and research by Jennings Bryant( Book )

50 editions published between 1993 and 2014 in English and Spanish and held by 1,395 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book, built on the foundation of the earlier volume Perspectives on Media Effects, serves not only as a reference volume for scholars interested in the topic, but also receives widespread use as a textbook for classes in media effects. Media effects research is regularly reshaped by critics from "the outside," whose provocative critiques cause researchers to rethink their assumptions, reexamine their findings, and recast their theories. The contributors to this volume represent some of the finest scholars in the media effects tradition who have weathered both the private storms from within and the public storms from the outside
Television and the American family( Book )

17 editions published between 1990 and 2001 in English and held by 1,211 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Television is the primary focal point of the modern American family's leisure time; as such, it has become a common source of concern. In fact, the notion that television is wrecking the family is one of the most popular sensationalistic themes of today's press. Can TV cause divorce? Is TV shaking up the American family? Although often voiced in frivolous tones, these questions are worthy of consideration. "Television and the American Family"--The first comprehensive empirical and theoretical examination of television and American families -- provides serious consideration to these and other related questions. Presenting the findings of an impressive group of communicologists, psychologists, sociologists, and education specialists, this book discusses: * How families use television, * How families are portrayed on television, * Television's impact on families and family members, and * Issues of public policy. This collection represents major advances in our present understanding of television and family; it provides a sturdy foundation on which future study in this vitally important field can be built. -- from http://www.alibris.co.uk (August 27, 2011)

Major collections of research contributions on the fundamental nature of children's television viewing have been compiled in this book. Chapters 1 through 4 are directed toward the examination of children's attention to television. Specifically, studies address children's actions, reactions, processing, recall, and learning to watch television. Chapters 5 through 9 are oriented toward children's comprehension of the content and format features of the medium. These chapters focus on interpretation and inference, methodological exploitation of the medium, the social psychological view, approaches to reality judgment, and educational television's entertainment features. Research applications or interventions are proposed in chapters l0 through l3. These final chapters center on formative research on appeal and comprehension, implications for cognition, imagination and emotion, the nature of television literacy and the critical viewer, and the ways present reports may be synthesized and future research conducted.
