The nature of photographs by Stephen Shore( Book )

64 editions published between 1998 and 2017 in 5 languages and held by 1,292 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

How does a photograph "work?" In this book Stephen Shore brings together more than fifty images (by such photographers as Walker Evans, Eugene Atget, Robert Adams, Diane Arbus, Frank Gohlke, Alfred Stieglitz, Lee Friedlander, Edward Weston, Robert Frank, William Eggleston, and Jan Groover) to illustrate a process of looking at and understanding photography. He traces the process by which the world in front of the camera is transformed into a photograph - and how that photograph, in turn, is transformed into a mental image

This book presents a personal selection of photographs from Shore's collection, providing an insider's view of this extraordinary moment and place, as seen through the eyes of one of photography's most beloved practitioners
Stephen Shore by Christy Lange( Book )

4 editions published between 2007 and 2011 in English and held by 327 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Stephen Shore's photographs of ordinary America have had an extraordinary impact. Shore spent the 1970s crisscrossing the continent to assemble his two best known bodies of work. American Surfaces and Uncommon Places These photographs focused on the minutiae of modern life, unveiling the exceptional beauty to be found in banality and, in the process, pioneering the two most important photographic idioms of the past thirty years the diaristic snapshot (later taken up by such artists as Nan Goldin and Wolfgang Tillmans) and the monumentalized landscape (as practiced by such photographers as Thomas Struth and Andreas Gursky) Shore was also one of the first art photographers to work in colour, capturing the sky blues, mustard yellows and avocado greens of a nation whose chromatic enthusiasm occasionally outstripped its taste." "Less well known are Shore's earlier works While still in high school in the mid-1960s he undertook a three-year project shooting Andy Warhol's legendary studio, the Factory, at its creative peak, featuring a revolving cast of characters that included the Velvet Underground, Nico, Edie Sedgwick and of course Warhol himself Soon afterward, inspired by the intellectually fertile late-1950s New York art scene, Shore produced a body of conceptual work seldom exhibited but fully engaged with the revolutionary ideas shaking the foundations of modern art. These works are fascinating not only for their contribution to the redefinition of the art object but also for the way they prefigured much of Shore's work to fallow, including American Surfaces and Uncommon Places." "Since the 1970s Shore has continued to expand his repertoire, moving effortlessly between black and white and colour, landscape and portraiture, large format and small in so doing, he has proven himself to be one of contemporary art's most vital photographers As fellow photographer Joel Sternfeld writes in the Focus section, 'What may ultimately be at stake in his pictures is the pure condition of sight itself.'"--BOOK JACKET
Andy Warhol's index (book) by Andy Warhol( Book )

6 editions published in 1967 in English and held by 252 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book, "published under the aegis of Andy Warhol, [is a] quintessential photobook [a] cornucopia of photographic imagery in which found photographs, snap-shots, photographs by Warhol's associates, photographic reproductions of his 'paintings' (themselves self-screened photographs) and other kinds of imagery are collaged to talk about one basic subject--the gargantuan ego and artistic talent of Andy Warhol. Index (Book) is one of the most important and exuberant Pop art objects ever published. From its holographic bubble-wrap cover to the various pop-ups and 'gifts'--the castle, the red accordion, the balloon (nearly always found perished nowadays, or stuck to the pages)--to the stream-of-consciousness photographs by such artists as Billy Name and Nat Finkelstein, it is also one of the ultimate photobooks-as-objects. It is, in addition, the primary Factory photo album, one of the most authoritative biographies of Warhol and a supreme example of the diaristic photographic mode before there was a considered diaristic mode."--The Photobook : A History Volume II / Martin Parr and Gerry Badger. London : Phaidon, 2004

"The photographers in SHOOT embrace the mundane image, imbuing it with an emotional impact that leaves a lasting impression." "SHOOT follows this photographic movement from its origins 25 years ago to its explosion in popularity today, beginning with the groundbreaking personal documentary work of Stephen Shore and Nan Goldin, through the incorporation of snapshot photography into fine art and fashion, to the current generation, from whom personal documentation is away of life. The photographers in SHOOT rely on their instincts, their engagement, and their "eye" to transform fleeting moments into powerful, dynamic images." "SHOOT includes a foreword by legendary photographer Stephen Shore, in addition to critical essays by professor Penny Martin, with a historical overview of the genre and aesthetic by Ken Miller. These essays link the work of influential photographers such as Nan Goldin, Wolfgang Tillmans, Juergen Teller, and Hiromix to a current generation of image-makers, including JH Engstrom, Tim Barber, Linus Bill, Jaimie Warren, and Dash Snow."--Jacket
