The language of the nude : four centuries of drawing the human body by William Breazeale( Book )

8 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 414 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"For centuries the nude body was the highest expression of human aspiration. The nude was a vehicle to express many meanings, be they religious, classical, or literary. The language of the Nude acknowledges the weighty significance of the nude in our world and demonstrates how art has responded to its challenges through the ages and throughout Europe." "Divided into four sections, the catalogue examines the major advances in drawing practice: the influence of Michelangelo and Raphael in the Renaissance; the dialogue between northern and southern influence in seventeenth-century Netherlands; the earlier formation and ultimate dominance of the Academie in eighteenth-century France; and the refined academic method applied to native subjects in nineteenth-century Germany. The book includes many important and lesser known works such as Giuseppe Cades's Rinaldo and Armida; Peter Paul Rubens's drawing of a figure after Michelangelo; Boucher's Birth of Venus; and Albrecht Durer's Female Nude with a Staff." "Heroes, gods, goddesses, and other religious figures are made sublime by being depicted in the nude. This Crocker collection does justice to such a noble subject."--Jacket

Toulouse-Lautrec and La Vie Moderne : Paris 1880-1910 by Phillip Dennis Cate( Book )

1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 226 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Accompanying a major traveling exhibition, this catalogue celebrates the groundbreaking avant-garde artists whose works embody the spirit and decadence of fin de siècle and Belle Époque Paris. Toulouse-Lautrec and La Vie Moderne is a celebration of the work of a generation of avant-garde artists at the turn of the nineteenth century in Paris who fought for artistic liberation against the strict codes of the Academy. Like the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists who preceded them, the Nabis, Incohérents, Symbolists, and Naturalists sought to reinterpret a rapidly changing society that was no longer easily definable. Artists such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Édouard Vuillard, Pierre Bonnard, Mary Cassatt, and Félix Vallotton, among others, render with naturalism and vivacity modern Parisian life and its café-concerts, cabarets, and brothels; street scenes and landscapes; and intimate domestic interiors. Little dreams in glass and metal : enameling in America 1920 to the present by Bernard N Jazzar( Book )

2 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 143 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"With one hundred and twenty-two works, ranging in date from 1920 to the present, made by more than ninety artists, Little Dreams reflects the diversity of modern and contemporary enameling in the United States. It also represents the wide variety of forms of formats artists have chosen to explore using this highly versatile medium. More than half the artists included in Little Dreams are women; at least twenty-eight studied or taught in Cleveland; fourteen were born abroad and came to this country in the 1930s to escape Nazi persecution and the impending war in Europe; many studied under the GI Bill after serving in the armed forces during World War II. While sixteen were based in California, others lived in disparate regions of the country from New England to the Pacific Northwest; many were accomplished in other media but chose enameling as their preferred vehicle; eight couples worked collaboratively; and many used enamel as but one tool in their multi-media compositions. The artists' themes are similarly diverse, ranging from traditional still lifes, genre scenes, and religious subjects to abstractions and powerfully evocative explorations of nature, culture, and memory. This impressive array of makers and their equally wide-ranging subjects reflect the dynamic state of enameling in this country in the last half of the twentieth century and the first decades of the twenty-first"--

"Social realism at its most vivid and vibrant. Images from an artist who witnessed a century of human struggle. Amazing glimpses of an age of change Stunning retrospective collection of a surrealist master. Not a well-known figure, Irving Norman created monumental works that depicted the world he saw and experienced throughout the decades from World War I into the 70's. There is a dark vision shaped by the wars and enormous change of his times as he saw it - war, revolution, industrialization, and the pace and crush of modern life. This collection attempts to bring Norman to a new position and appreciation among modern American masters."--GoogleBooks
