Classical manybody problems amenable to exact treatments : solvable and/or integrable and/or linearizable ... in one, two,
and three dimensional space by
Francesco Calogero(
Book
)
15 editions published between 2001 and 2014 in English and held by 304 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This book focuses on exactly treatable classical (i.e. nonquantal nonrelativistic) manybody problems, as described by Newton's equation of motion for mutually interacting point particles. Most of the material is based on the author's research and is published here for the first time in book form. One of the main novelties is the treatment of problems in two and threedimensional space. Many related techniques are presented, e.g. the theory of generalized Lagrangiantype interpolation in higherdimensional spaces. This book is written for students as well as for researchers; it works out detailed examples before going on to treat more general cases. Many results are presented via exercises, with clear hints pointing to their solutions."Jacket

What is integrability? by
V Zakharov(
Book
)
10 editions published between 1990 and 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 290 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This monograph deals with integrable dynamic systems with an infinite number of degrees of freedom. Leading scientists were invited to discuss the notion of integrability with two main points in mind: 1. a presentation of the various recently elaborated methods for determining whether a given system is integrable or not; 2. to understand the increasingly more important role of integrable systems in modern applied mathematics and theoretical physics. Topics dealt with include: the applicability and integrability of "universal" nonlinear wave models (Calogero); perturbation theory for translational invariant nonlinear Hamiltonian systems (in 2+1d) with an additional integral of motion (Zakharov, Schulman); the role of the Painlevé test for ordinary (Ercolani, Siggia) and partial differential (Newell, Tabor) equations; the theory of integrable maps in a plane (Veselov); and the theory of the KdV equation with nonvanishing boundary conditions at infinity (Marchenko)

Zeros of polynomials and solvable nonlinear evolution equations by
Francesco Calogero(
)
4 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 118 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Reporting a novel breakthrough in the identification and investigation of solvable and integrable nonlinearly coupled evolution ordinary differential equations (ODEs) or partial differential equations (PDEs), this text includes practical examples throughout to illustrate the theoretical concepts. Beginning with systems of ODEs, including secondorder ODEs of Newtonian type, it then discusses systems of PDEs, and systems evolving in discrete time. It reports a novel, differential algorithm which can be used to evaluate all the zeros of a generic polynomial of arbitrary degree: a remarkable development of a fundamental mathematical problem with a long history. The book will be of interest to applied mathematicians and mathematical physicists working in the area of integrable and solvable nonlinear evolution equations; it can also be used as supplementary reading material for general applied mathematics or mathematical physics courses

Compliance quantified by
Rudolf Avenhaus(
Book
)
3 editions published between 1996 and 2009 in English and held by 15 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
International agreements, such as those governing arms control or the environment, virtually always require some degree of verification of information, in order that compliance can be established. To ensure that the verification process can be regarded as efficient, effective and impartial, it is important to have a mathematical model of it. One can be derived by applying methods from statistics and the theory of noncooperative games, developed in part by John Nash, who received a Nobel prize in 1994 for his work. The methods permit the development of rational verification strategies, as well as such fundamental concepts as guaranteed probability of detection, timeliness of inspections and the deterrence of illegal activity. In this 1996 book, the required theory is introduced gradually in the context of specific realworld examples. The only prerequisites are simple calculus and statistics, so the book should be accessible to a broad range of scientists and nonscientists, in industrial, academic or governmental environments

Approach your problems from the right end It isn't that they can't see the solution. It is and begin with the answers. Then one day, that they can't see the problem. perhaps you will find the final question. G.K. Chesterton. The Scandal of Fother 'The Hennit Clad in Crane Feathers' in R. Brown 'The point of a Pin'. van GWs The Chinese More Murders. Growing specialization and diversification have brought a host of monographs and textbooks on increasingly specialized topics. However, the "tree" of knowledge of mathematics and related fields does not grow only by putting forth new branches. It also happens, quite often in fact, that branches which were thought to be completely disparate are suddenly seen to be related. Further, the kind and level of sophistication of mathematics applied in various sciences has changed drastically in recent years: measure theory is used (nontrivially) in regional and theoretical economics; algebraic geometry interacts with physics; the Minkowsky lemma, coding theory and the structure of water meet one another in packing and covering theory; quantum fields, crystal defects and mathematical programming profit from homotopy theory; Lie algebras are relevant to filtering; and prediction and electrical engineering can use Stein spaces. And in addition to this there are such new emerging subdisciplines as "experimental mathematics", "CFD", "completely integrable systems", "chaos, synergetics and largescale order", which are almost impossible to fit into the existing classification schemes. They draw upon widely different sections of mathematics
