This document is a monograph intended for advanced undergraduate students, or beginning graduate students, who have some knowledge of modern physics as well as classical physics, including the elementary quantum mechanical treatment of the hydrogen atom and angular momentum. The first chapter introduces symmetry and relates it to the mathematical concept of invariance under a transformation of variables. These ideas are illustrated in the context of the classical laws of mechanics in the Newtonian form. The emphasis here, as in the rest of the monograph, is directed toward physical, rather than mathematical, generality. The second chapter, which is only partly completed, and which will be revised in order to simplify the presentation, discusses symmetries of the Schrodinger equation for one or two particles, including gauge invariance of the wave function and parity.
