Feynman's thesis : a new approach to quantum theory by
Richard P Feynman(
Book
)
29 editions published between 1942 and 2010 in English and held by 414 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Richard Feynman's never previously published doctoral thesis formed the heart of much of his brilliant and profound work in theoretical physics. Entitled "The Principle of Least Action in Quantum Mechanics," its original motive was to quantize the classical actionatadistance electrodynamics. Because that theory adopted an overall spacetime viewpoint, the classical Hamiltonian approach used in the conventional formulations of quantum theory could not be used, so Feynman turned to the Lagrangian function and the principle of least action as his points of departure." "The result was the path integral approach, which satisfied and transcended its original motivation, and has enjoyed great success in renormalized quantum field theory, including the derivation of the ubiquitous Feynman diagrams for elementary particles. Path integrals have many other applications, including atomic, molecular, and nuclear scattering, statistical mechanics, quantum liquids and solids, Brownian motion, and noise theory. It also sheds new light on fundamental issues like the interpretation of quantum theory because of its new overall spacetime viewpoint." Book Jacket

The essays in this book, by L.M. Brown, M. Dresden, R.S. Mills, S.S. Schweber, T.Y. Cao, and D.V. Shirkov, discuss the history of renormalization theory from the late 19th century to the 1950s and the effect it has had not only on the development of field theory, but also on our ideas of what is a fundamental and what is a phenomenological theory

The symmetry of natural laws by
Laurie M Brown(
Book
)
4 editions published in 1966 in English and held by 16 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This document is a monograph intended for advanced undergraduate students, or beginning graduate students, who have some knowledge of modern physics as well as classical physics, including the elementary quantum mechanical treatment of the hydrogen atom and angular momentum. The first chapter introduces symmetry and relates it to the mathematical concept of invariance under a transformation of variables. These ideas are illustrated in the context of the classical laws of mechanics in the Newtonian form. The emphasis here, as in the rest of the monograph, is directed toward physical, rather than mathematical, generality. The second chapter, which is only partly completed, and which will be revised in order to simplify the presentation, discusses symmetries of the Schrodinger equation for one or two particles, including gauge invariance of the wave function and parity. (Author/PR)

The rise of the standard model : particle physics in the 1960s and 1970s by
Lillian Hoddeson(
Book
)
4 editions published between 1997 and 1999 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Based on a conference held at Stanford University, this is the third volume of a series recounting the history of particle physics and offers the most uptodate account of the rise of the Standard Model, which explains the microstructure of the world in terms of quarks and leptons and their interactions. The wideranging articles explore the detailed scientific experiments, the institutional settings in which they took place, and the ways in which the many details of the puzzle fit together to account for the Standard Model
