Selected papers of Richard Feynman : with commentary by Richard P Feynman( )

25 editions published between 2000 and 2007 in English and held by 1,770 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

These scientific papers of Richard Feynman are renowned for their brilliant content and the author's striking original style. They are grouped by topic: path integral approach to the foundations of quantum mechanics and quantum field theory, renormalized quantum electrodynamics, theory of superfluid liquid helium, theory of the Fermi interaction, polarons, gravitation, partons, computer theory, etc. Comments on Feynman's topics are provided by the editor, together with biographical notes and a complete bibliography of Feynman's publications
Feynman's thesis : a new approach to quantum theory by Richard P Feynman( )

34 editions published between 1942 and 2016 in English and Japanese and held by 1,383 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Richard Feynman's never previously published doctoral thesis formed the heart of much of his brilliant and profound work in theoretical physics. Entitled "The Principle of Least Action in Quantum Mechanics," its original motive was to quantize the classical action-at-a-distance electrodynamics. Because that theory adopted an overall space-time viewpoint, the classical Hamiltonian approach used in the conventional formulations of quantum theory could not be used, so Feynman turned to the Lagrangian function and the principle of least action as his points of departure." "The result was the path integral approach, which satisfied - and transcended - its original motivation, and has enjoyed great success in renormalized quantum field theory, including the derivation of the ubiquitous Feynman diagrams for elementary particles. Path integrals have many other applications, including atomic, molecular, and nuclear scattering, statistical mechanics, quantum liquids and solids, Brownian motion, and noise theory. It also sheds new light on fundamental issues like the interpretation of quantum theory because of its new overall space-time viewpoint."--Jacket
Twentieth century physics( Book )

22 editions published between 1990 and 1995 in English and held by 1,144 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Twentieth Century Physics, Second Edition is a major historical study of the scientific and cultural development of physics in the twentieth century. This unique three-volume work offers a scholarly but highly readable overview of the development of physics, addressing both the cultural and the scientific aspects of the discipline. The three volumes deal with the major themes of physics in a quasi-chronological manner. The first volume covers the early part of the century while the second and third volumes discuss more recent issues. In each case, the development of the theme is traced from its inception to the present day. The list of contributors includes Nobel laureates, fellows of the Royal Society, and other distinguished international physicists. Where appropriate, specialists in the history of physics have written their own commentaries, providing a valuable counterpoint to the physicists' perspectives

Renormalization : from Lorentz to Landau (and beyond) by Laurie M Brown( Book )

16 editions published between 1993 and 1995 in English and held by 390 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The essays in this book, by L.M. Brown, M. Dresden, R.S. Mills, S.S. Schweber, T.Y. Cao, and D.V. Shirkov, discuss the history of renormalization theory from the late 19th century to the 1950s and the effect it has had not only on the development of field theory, but also on our ideas of what is a fundamental and what is a phenomenological theory

The symmetry of natural laws by Laurie M Brown( Book )

4 editions published in 1966 in English and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This document is a monograph intended for advanced undergraduate students, or beginning graduate students, who have some knowledge of modern physics as well as classical physics, including the elementary quantum mechanical treatment of the hydrogen atom and angular momentum. The first chapter introduces symmetry and relates it to the mathematical concept of invariance under a transformation of variables. These ideas are illustrated in the context of the classical laws of mechanics in the Newtonian form. The emphasis here, as in the rest of the monograph, is directed toward physical, rather than mathematical, generality. The second chapter, which is only partly completed, and which will be revised in order to simplify the presentation, discusses symmetries of the Schrodinger equation for one or two particles, including gauge invariance of the wave function and parity.
