Two hundred juvenile and adult, current and former, women street prostitutes in the San Francisco Bay Area, served as subjects in this study. The average age of the subjects was 22; 70% were under 21, about 60% were 16 and under; many were 10,11 and 12 years old. The average financial situation of all the women interviewed was described as 'just making it.'

A study of 200 juvenile and adult street prostitutes documented extremely high levels of sexual child abuse in their background. Sixty percent of the subjects were sexually exploited by an average of two people each, over a period of 20 months. Two-thirds were sexually abused by father figures. Seventy percent of the women reported that the sexual exploitation definitely affected their decision to become a prostitute. The others reflected the influence in their open-ended comments

Sixty percent of the subjects were victims of juvenile sexually exploitation and all were victimized by various forms of physical and emotion abuse.
