Ink and gold : Islamic calligraphy by Marcus Fraser( Book )

3 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 228 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Ink and Gold charts the development of Islamic calligraphy over a thousand years, from its beginnings in the Arabian Peninsula. Given the status of the Qur'an as the word of Allah and ambivalence towards representation of living things, the art of the pen became the focus of an extraordinary energy. The essays in this volume cover all the major centers of Islamic calligraphy, from North Africa to Central Asia, highlighting the achievements of Islamic calligraphers in the ages of the 'Abbasid (749-258), Seljuk (1055-1243), Ilkhanid (1256-1357), Safavid (1502-1736), and Mughal Empires (1526-1857). Though pride of place is given to the Qur'an, calligraphy is also examined in mystical and scientific works, Persian poetry, and calligraphy albums."

Textile messages : inscribed fabrics from Roman to Abbasid Egypt by Textiles from the Nile valley meeting( Book )

3 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 106 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The practice to supply textiles with inscriptions is well known in Egypt from Pharaonic times onwards. Nevertheless systematic studies on inscribed fabrics have been neglected until the middle of the 1990s when they almost simultaneously caught the interest of various scholars. This illustrated volume is a first compilation of what is known on the subject so far. It concentrates on textiles of the first millennium AD, a period of changing cultures, religions and languages in Egypt, mirrored by the Greek, Coptic and Arabic inscriptions on the fabrics. The emphasis lies on the historical, linguistic, sociological and artistic aspects of these textiles. Numerous fabrics from international collections are introduced. Further articles deal with the radiocarbon dating and technical aspects."--Jacket
Egypt : faith after the pharaohs by Cäcilia Fluck( Book )

1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 100 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The first millennium in Egypt saw a transition from an ancient pantheon of pagan gods to the one God of the three Abrahamic faiths. Jewish, Christian and Muslim communities were established in succession and peacefully co-existed for long periods of time periodically interrupted by conflict and violence, each faith responding to pre-existing traditions by either rejecting earlier artistic ideas or by adapting and assimilating them. Over 300 objects have been specially selected for this publication, drawing on the significant collections of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and the British Museum and reflecting the rich cultural diversity of the Nile Valley from the first to the twelfth century AD. Through beautiful works of art, including jewellery, painted panels, textiles, sculpture, calligraphy, manuscripts, glass and ceramics, we gain a better understanding of the lives of ordinary and extraordinary people in this important period in Egyptian history. The book also reveals the different types of sacred buildings - synagogue, church, and mosque - and explains their architectural history and dissemination in Egypt
