10 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 1,359 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This new work updates and significantly expands The Hastings Center's 1987 Guidelines on the Termination of Life-Sustaining Treatment and Care of the Dying. Like its predecessor, this second edition will shape the ethical and legal framework for decision-making on treatment and end-of-life care in the United States. This groundbreaking work incorporates 25 years of research and innovation in clinical care, law, and policy. It is written for physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals and is structured for easy reference in difficult clinical situations. It supports the work of clinical ethicists, ethics committee members, health lawyers, clinical educators, scholars, and policymakers. It includes extensive practical recommendations. On the uses of the humanities : vision and application : a report by Hastings Center( Book )

6 editions published in 1984 in English and held by 195 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Designed to provide a general assessment of the rapidly growing applied humanities movement in the United States, this report sets forth issues found to be central to an assessment of current work in the applied humanities, presents a general survey of the nature of applied work in a variety of disciplines, and offers conclusions and observations about how high-quality work in applied humanities can be nurtured and supported in the future. The first of seven sections presents an introduction to issues surrounding the applied humanities movement. The second section examines basic features of current debates related to the humanities by examining three historical developments--Greek thought in the fifth and fourth centuries B.C.; individualism and the reaction against tradition emerging after the Reformation in the West in the 17th and 18th centuries; and professionalization and institutionalization, which began toward the end of the 19th century, reaching maturity during the 20th century. Section 3, "Current Work in Applied Humanities," discusses philosophy, applied and public history, and literature. Section 4 presents models of application while section 5 deals with fields of application--specifically the humanities and the biomedical sciences, humanities and the social sciences, and public policy and the policy sciences. Academic preparation and disciplinary standards are the focus of the next section. The final section summarizes the hopes, problems, and needs of the humanities as a serious discipline of study. (LH)

Connecting American values with health reform( Book )

3 editions published in 2009 in English and French and held by 149 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this essay set, eleven authors each examine a different foundational value, and what its policy implications are if we take it seriously. In an introduction, Hastings Center president Thomas H. Murray writes, "Core American values, rather than existing in ineluctable tension with one another, form a sturdy, mutually reinforcing foundation for health reform. Universal participation may be a concept whose time has finally come." And, in a letter endorsing the essays, former U.S. Senator and current New Jersey Governor Jon S. Corzine writes, "Health care policy is often described as an arena of intense partisan and ideological division. But there are also important areas of consensus that reflect agreement about some basic, core values. Health care reform will be most successful if it draws on these common values."--Publisher
