Purely objective reality by John N Deely( )

10 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 1,252 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This volume solves the problem of the subjectivity/objectivity couplet, making an indispensable contribution both to semiotics and to philosophy. American philosopher John Deely offers the first sustained and theoretically consistent interrogation of the means by which human understanding of 'reality' will be instrumental in the survival - or destruction - of planet Earth."--Jacket

The tradition via Heidegger : an essay on the meaning of being in the philosophy of Martin Heidegger by John N Deely( Book )

17 editions published in 1971 in English and held by 523 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is not addressed to beginning students in philosophy so much as it is addressed to those who, though fairly well-versed in the philosophical tradition, find themselves frankly baffled and brought up short by the writ ings of Martin Heidegger, and who-while recognizing the novelty of the Heideggerean enterprise - may sometimes find themselves wondering if this "thinking of Being" is after all rich enough to deserve still further effort on their part. That at least was my own state of mind after a couple of years spent in studying Heidegger. Then one day, in preparing for a seminar, I suddenly saw, not indeed all of what Heidegger is about, but at least where he stands in terms of previous philosophers, and what is the ground of his thinking. After that, it became possible to assess certain strengths and weaknesses of his thought in terms of his own methodology vis-a-vis those earlier thinkers who, without having dreamed of anything quite like a Daseinsanalyse, had yet recognized in explicit terms the feature of experience on which the identi fication of Sein (and consequently the Daseinsanalyse) depends for its poss ibility

What distinguishes human understanding? by John N Deely( Book )

6 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 223 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Provoked by the remark of a colleague that, could this promissory note be fulfilled, it would provide "the first essay worth reading on the subject since the days of Locke and Hume," Deely decided to break with the analytic tradition of leaving promissory notes unfulfilled and to develop the alleged possible proof in full." "A colloquium convened by Professor Norma Tasca, in the Fall of 1995 in Porto, Portugal, provided Deely with the occasion. His lengthy essay for the occasion, ponderously titled "The Intersemiosis of Perception and Understanding," became the initial draft of this book."
Intentionality and semiotics : a story of mutual fecundation by John Deely( Book )

6 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 191 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"How can either philosophy or science claim to discover objective truth when what is asserted exists only subjectively in the individual minds of the investigators, and in the minds they persuade? In Intentionality and Semiotics, John Deely succinctly and vigorously summarizes his solution to this problem, formulated in response to an invitation from W. Norris Clarke, SJ (to whom this book is dedicated) to address the problem before a meeting of the International Society of Thomas Aquinas within the framework of the 2003 Annual Meeting of the American Philosophical Association."--Jacket
The impact on philosophy of semiotics : the quasi-error of the external world with a dialogue between a 'semiotist' and a 'realist' by John N Deely( Book )

6 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 181 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The "problem of the external world," which modern philosophy began by creating, postmodern philosophy begins by revealing as a quasi-error. The book concludes with a philosophical dialogue revealing the inadequacy to the postmodern situation of a simple return to any past form of "realism," and explaining why the postmodern situation calls for a new definition of human being as "the semiotic animal.""--Jacket
Descartes & Poinsot : the crossroad of signs and ideas by John N Deely( Book )

6 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 164 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Rene Descartes (1596-1650) and John Poinsot (1589-1644) were contemporaries who stood, unbeknownst to them, at a crossroads in the history of philosophy. While Poinsot's work on semiotics became unfashionable after his death, Descartes' theory of ideas carried modern philosophy down a different path that proved to be a dead end. In Descartes & Poinsot, John Deely contends that semiotics can lead us beyond the rationalist trap of modernity. This innovative volume reveals that Poinsot's forgotten philosophies provide the missing link between the ancients and the postmodern."--BOOK JACKET
Medieval philosophy redefined : the development of cenoscopic science, AD 354 to 1644 (from the birth of Augustine to the death of Poinsot) by John N Deely( Book )

10 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 163 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Viewed in these terms, the Latin Age, the "middle" period between ancient and modern thought, comes to be seen as the maturation of cenoscopic science in the emergence of semiotics. This maturation made inevitable the turn toward ideoscopy that positively defined modernity. But just as importantly, the medieval maturation, lost along the Way of Ideas pioneered by Descartes and systematized by Kant, presaged postmodernity -- an age of intellectual culture marked positively by two realizations: first, that the Enlightenment view of ideoscopy as the whole of science is unsustainable; second, that the modern "analytic" view of philosophy as a linguistic investigation quite separable from history is a myopia
Shaping psychology : how we got where we're going by Timothy Gannon( Book )

4 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 145 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Sign crossroads in global perspective : semioethics and responsibility by Susan Petrilli( Book )

7 editions published between 2010 and 2017 in English and held by 135 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Language is the species-specific human version of the animal system of communication. In contrast to non-human animals, language enables humans to invent a plurality of possible worlds; reflect upon signs; be responsible for our actions; gain conscious awareness of our inevitable mutual involvement in the network of life on this planet; and be responsibly involved in the destiny of the planet. The author looks at semiotics, the study of signs, symbols, and communication as developing sequentially rather than successively, more synchronically than diachronically. She discusses the contemporary phenomenon that people in today's society have witnessed and participated in, as part of the development of semiotics. Although there is a long history preceding semiotics, in a sense the field is, as a phenomenon, more "of our time" than of any time past. Its leading figures, whom Petrilli examines, belong to the twentieth and twenty-first century. Semiotics is associated with a capacity for listening. This capacity is also the condition for reconnecting to and recovering the ancient vocation of semiotics as that branch of medical science relating to the interpretation of signs or symptoms. The pragmatic aspect of global semiotics studies the impact of language or signs on those who use them, and looks for consequences in actual practice. In this respect, Petrilli theorizes that the task for semiotics in the era of globalization is nothing less than to take responsibility for life in its totality."--Provided by publisher

Semiotics 1981 : [proceedings of the sixth annual meeting of the Semiotic Society of America, held October 1-4, 1981, in Nashville, Tennessee] by John N Deely( Book )

10 editions published in 1983 in English and held by 113 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume differs from the volume, Semiotics 1980, in that it is no longer an experimental product, but the result of a permanent commitment of the Semiotic Society of America to publish each year henceforward those papers presented at its Annual Meeting which are submitted to the Secretariat in timely and proper form. Thus Semiotics 1981 marks the beginning, following upon the experimental Semiotics 1980 volume, of an indefinite series of volumes presenting the cross-fertilization of styles, topics, methodologies, and traditions "in which new ideas vie for survival and experiment is at a premium." It is this cross fertilization which is at the heart of the vitality and integration and redistribution of the world of knowledge. The historical value of such a record is obvious. But the more immediate objective of these volumes of annual proceedings is to promote participation in the work of "semioticizing" traditional perspectives and disciplines by providing a forum in which young scholars can meet regularly and find an outlet for their efforts at interdisciplinary thinking which are not always welcome in the journals and proceedings devoted to the promotion only of traditionally specialized perspectives
