Für Serge Diaghilews Ballets Russes schrieb Strawinski einige Ballette über russisch-märchenhafte Stoffe. Der Feuervogel wurde 1910 zum ersten großen Erfolg Strawinskis. Die ursprünglich für 100-köpfiges Orchester gesetzte, impressionistisch gefärbte Partitur wurde 1919 noch für mittelgroßes Orchester uminstrumentiert, der man heute den Vorzug gibt. Sie ist auch auf der vorliegenden CD eingespielt. Auch den aufwendigen Orchestersatz des Balletts Petruschka von 1911 hat Strawinski 1947 umgearbeitet und vereinfacht. Die Bedeutung des Rhythmischen kommt bei beiden Werken in der geänderten Fassung viel deutlicher zur Geltung. Das kurze Scherzo à la russe ergänzt diese Aufnahme mit dem Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra unter Paavo Järvi, die in jeder Hinsicht "outstanding" (Gramophone 5/03) ist und einen hervorragenden Einblick in die Ballettmusiken Strawinskis gibt
