The Recurrence of abuse in child-abusing families : final report by Roy C Herrenkohl( Book )

2 editions published in 1978 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A study was made of the repetition of child abuse. (This repetition is sometimes referred to as recurrence or recidivism). The central feature of the research strategy was a followup on a group of families cited for abuse, conducted to determine the degree to which abuse had recurred or had been discontinued and to assess the conditions associated with these behaviors. To accomplish this, two activities were undertaken. One activity provided for analysis of existing records relating to the families' abusive treatment of their children. The other consisted of interviews of heads of families about the situation at the time of the initial abuse citation and about the parents' background, particularly with respect to child rearing practices the parents had themselves experienced. An interview instrument and case record review procedures were developed, the child abuse literature was examined, and an instrument was designed to assess hypotheses regarding antecedents of abuse. A total of 328 families residing in two Pennsylvania counties participated in the study. Data analysis initially focused on the recurrence or discontinuation of abuse; the relationship between indicators of recurrence and possible causes of recurrence were then examined. Finally, the effectiveness of services in reducing or preventing the recurrence of abuse was assessed. (Numerous results are discussed, and implications for protecting children are pointed out.) (Rh)

Circumstances Surrounding the Occurrence of Child Abuse by Roy C Herrenkohl( Book )

1 edition published in 1979 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The circumstances which give rise to or "trigger" an abuse incident have been given relatively little systematic attention. In analyzing the case records of all families (n=328) charged with child abuse over a ten-year period in a two-county area of Pennsylvania, all instances of family conflict were identified and the circumstances surrounding the incident determined. These circumstances were examined in relation to the type of abuse. Findings indicate that abuse occurs under circumstances that are relatively commonplace in families with children. Physical abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect were found to occur under somewhat different although not particularly unusual circumstances in families with children. Explanations for association of such commonplace circumstances with abuse are considered. (Jmb)

Deficiency of Maternal Approval in the Abusive Family Environment by Roy C Herrenkohl( Book )

1 edition published in 1979 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study examines the hypothesis that the lack of parental approval of the child characterizes child-abusing families. As part of a larger study of the coping styles of such families, a variety of verbal and non-verbal behaviors in parent-child interactions was examined. Subjects were 80 mother-child pairs from among four groups of comparable ses: (1) families served by a child welfare agency, formally charged with child abuse; (2) families served by a child welfare agency but not charged with abuse; (3) families served by Head Start but not by a child welfare agency; and (4) families served by a day care program but not by a child welfare agency. The interactions involved four types of activities: puzzles, play-doh, felt board, and story-reading. In addition to the interaction observations, several other assessment procedures were used in the study. Mothers were interviewed, and children were administered the McCarthy Scale of Mental Abilities and observed in their preschool classrooms. Results of multiple regression analyses, with income and age of child controlled (average age 52 months), showed that abuse group mothers manifested less approval behavior than control group mothers. Examination of zero-order correlations indicated that lower amounts of approval behavior were related to the mother's child-care responsibilities, observed parental detachment, number of mother-child separations, and the child's cognitive ability.
