Prints and books : informal papers by William Mills Ivins( Book )

1 edition published in 1926 in English and held by 370 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As first Curator of Prints at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, William M. Ivins, Jr. was primarily responisble for determining the character of the Department and its collection. He felt that this collection should be "composed of a corpus of prints in themselves distinctly works of art, filled out and illustrated by many prints which have only a technical historical importance." Prints and Books, a collection of essays by Ivins, deals with the creation of the Mertopolitan's Print Department; with the acquisition of prints and of rare and illustrated books of artistic, historical, and technological importance; with periods of stylistic and technological development in printmaking; and with particular artists, their methods and importance. Upon its original publication in 1927, the Saturday Review remarked, "This author has something of his own to say: some fresh and original point of appreciation of aesthetic qualities, or a clear and judicious summing up of an artist's achievement, or a keen perception of the tendencies of a whole period ... Exceptional in so many ways, this book has the freshness and sprightly movement which makes it appealing, readable, entertaining, even at first glance - and at the same time is filled with keen and broad perceptions of the larger aspects of the field - passages tucked away unpretentiously between the lines which lure one back to repeated 'second readings.' After so much timid accuracy in books on the fine arts it is refreshing to find an author who has ideas." Full of fact and reudite opinion, Prints and Books ranks with Ivans' other works as a farsighted analysis of the world of art. -- Inside cover
