The fifty year friendship and love between two Beijing-style opera singers--from boyhood to middle age--becomes intertwined with their on stage roles. Dieye (Leslie Cheung) acts the female role of "Concubine" and Xiaolou (Zhang Fengyi) as the "King". Dieye feels betrayed when Xiaolou marries Juxian (Gong Li) and the two no longer perform together. During the Cultural Revolution, in a publicly humiliating re-education "struggle session" by the Red Guard, Xiaolou politically denounces the effeminate Dieye, who then exposes Juxian's past as a courtesan, causing her to suicide. A decade later following a period of liberalization, Dieye and Xiaolou are once again able to perform their signature opera in their traditional roles. Set against the backdrop of China's tumultuous social change, from the warlord era through the Cultural Revolution, it explores issues of gender, sexual, and political identity
