Essays on the theory of numbers : I. Continuity and irrational numbers. II. The nature and meaning of numbers by Richard Dedekind( Book )

39 editions published between 1901 and 2009 in English and held by 1,184 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Two essays on mathematical theory. The first is about irrational numbers. The second deals with whole numbers and infinity, and with the logical validity of inductive mathematical proofs
Vorlesungen über Zahlentheorie by Peter Gustav Lejeune Dirichlet( Book )

93 editions published between 1836 and 2017 in 3 languages and held by 872 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Peter Gustav Lejeune Dirichlet (1805–59) may be considered the father of modern number theory. He studied in Paris, coming under the influence of mathematicians like Fourier and Legendre, and then taught at Berlin and Göttingen universities, where he was the successor to Gauss. This book contains lectures on number theory given by Dirichlet in 1856–7. They include his famous proofs of the class number theorem for binary quadratic forms and the existence of an infinity of primes in every appropriate arithmetical progression. The material was first published in 1863 by Richard Dedekind (1831–1916), professor at Braunschweig, who had been a junior colleague of Dirichlet at Göttingen. The second edition appeared in 1871; this reissue is of the third, revised and expanded, edition of 1879; a fourth edition appeared as late as 1894. The appendices contain further work by both Dirichlet and Dedekind
What are numbers and what should they be? = (Was sind und was sollen die Zahlen?) by Richard Dedekind( Book )

98 editions published between 1888 and 2017 in 7 languages and held by 604 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The nineteenth century saw the paradoxes and obscurities of eighteenth-century calculus gradually replaced by the exact theorems and statements of rigorous analysis. It became clear that all analysis could be deduced from the properties of the real numbers. But what are the real numbers and why do they have the properties we claim they do? In this charming and influential book, Richard Dedekind (1831–1916), Professor at the Technische Hochschule in Braunschweig, showed how to resolve this problem starting from elementary ideas. His method of constructing the reals from the rationals (the Dedekind cut) remains central to this day and was generalised by Conway in his construction of the 'surreal numbers'. This reissue of Dedekind's 1888 classic is of the 'second, unaltered' 1893 edition

Theory of algebraic integers by Richard Dedekind( Book )

23 editions published between 1877 and 2010 in English and French and held by 347 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The invention of ideals by Dedekind in the 1870s was well ahead of its time, and proved to be the genesis of what today we would call algebraic number theory. His memoir 'Sur la Theorie des Nombres Entiers Algebriques' first appeared in instalments in the 'Bulletin des sciences mathematiques' in 1877. This is a translation of that work by John Stillwell, who also adds a detailed introduction that gives the historical background as well as outlining the mathematical obstructions that Dedekind was striving to overcome. Dedekind's memoir gives a candid account of his development of an elegant theory as well as providing blow-by-blow comments as he wrestled with the many difficulties encountered en route. A must for all number theorists
Lectures on number theory by Peter Gustav Lejeune Dirichlet( Book )

1 edition published in 1999 in English and held by 318 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This volume is a translation of Dirichlet's Vorlesungen uber Zahlentheorie which includes nine supplements by Dedekind and an introduction by John Stillwell, who translated the volume." "Lectures on Number Theory is the first of its kind on the subject matter. It covers most of the topics that are standard in a modern first course on number theory, but also includes Dirichlet's famous results on class numbers and primes in arithmetic progressions." "The book is suitable as a textbook, yet it also offers a fascinating historical perspective that links Gauss with modern number theory."--Jacket

Essays on the theory of numbers by Richard Dedekind( Book )

47 editions published between 1901 and 2016 in 4 languages and held by 232 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume contains the two most important essays on the logical foundations of the number system by the famous German mathematician J.W.R. Dedekind. The first presents Dedekind's theory of the irrational number-the Dedekind cut idea-perhaps the most famous of several such theories created in the 19th century to give a precise meaning to irrational numbers, which had been used on an intuitive basis since Greek times. This paper provided a purely arithmetic and perfectly rigorous foundation for the irrational numbers and thereby a rigorous meaning of continuity in analysis. The second essay is an attempt to give a logical basis for transfinite numbers and properties of the natural numbers. It examines the notion of natural numbers, the distinction between finite and transfinite (infinite) whole numbers, and the logical validity of the type of proof called mathematical or complete induction. The contents of these essays belong to the foundations of mathematics and will be welcomed by those who are prepared to look into the somewhat subtle meanings of the elements of our number system. As a major work of an important mathematician, the book deserves a place in the personal library of every practicing mathematician and every teacher and historian of mathematics.
