"C'est une photo prise un an avant la chute du mur de Berlin. Une photo prise lors d'une rencontre clandestine au fond des bois, à la frontière de la Pologne et de la Tchécoslovaquie et qui rassemble des opposants tchécoslovaques et polonais en lutte contre les régimes communistes au pouvoir dans leur pays. Ces conspirateurs de la démocratie, on les appelait dissidents. Sur cette photo apparaissent des personnages devenus célèbres - le tchécoslovaque Vaclav Havel, les Polonais Adam Michnik et Jacek Kuron - et d'autres, plus anonymes. Leurs parcours spirituels, politiques et historiques étaient différents et pourtant tous, ouvriers ou intellectuels, croyants ou non patriotes polonais ou internationalistes trotskistes, tous participèrent à cette tentative de lutter contre des pouvoirs totalitaires exerçant leur joug fait de peur, de répression et d'oubli. La dissidence en Europe de l'Est fut un combat politique et moral dont le film retrace le cours de 1956 à 1989, en évoquant notamment la création de l'opposition démocratique et de Solidarité en Pologne, celle de la Charte 77 en Tchécoslovaquie, et l'essor du mouvement de littérature clandestine (samizdat) en Hongrie. Mais la dissidence fut aussi un choix existentiel : comment advient-il, dans une vie, le moment du choix ? Comment et pourquoi des individus refusent-ils de s'accommoder ?
