This study evaluated performance based teacher education (PBTE) programmes conducted in three Australian States for technical and further education (TAFE) teachers during 1979. The objectives were to determine: the effectiveness of the PBTE approach; reactions of participants in the programme; alternative strategies for the implementation of PBTE; institutional considerations in its operation; suitability of the materials and the reactions of the teacher educators. The PBTE programmes involved one hundred and forty five student teachers, twelve TAFE educators and twenty eight field supervisors. The materials were competency based modules from Ohio State University. The authors have concluded that the PBTE model has considerable potential for TAFE teacher education.
