For the first time the social history of the United States is examined in four chronological periods: 1960-1966, when modern ideals flourished and then began to fade; 1967-1974, when cultural changes began to remake America; 1975-1980, when the cultural changes led to standoffs between opposing sides; and the 1980s, when postmodern conditions broadened their influence and discord became more pronounced

Communities of Frank Lloyd Wright : Taliesin and beyond by Myron A Marty( Book )

10 editions published in 2009 in English and Undetermined and held by 308 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A study of Wright's life in relation to Taliesin and his other communities. Despite the numerous studies of Frank Lloyd Wright's life and architecture, little has been published about his life in relation to the communities that dominated his life. Wright, a fervent believer in individualism and an ardent advocate of democracy, worked in communities throughout his career of more than six decades. These communities, which he led with unquestioned authority, made possible his extraordinary productivity. They also helped sustain his genius, provided him with crucial social outlets, and made it possible for him to remain a creative force outside the mainstream of American architecture until his death at age 92.--from publisher description

Work, Jobs, and the Language of the Humanities by Myron A Marty( Book )

1 edition published in 1979 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Steps must be taken to upset the academic equilibrium that sustains the dearth of humanities in community college curricula. Accommodation to institutional and societal factors have forced an emphasis on practical rather than liberal arts courses, and provided for an incomplete curriculum that does not help the student meet humanistic educational goals. A distinction should be made between the repetitive and futile, though necessary, nature of a "job" and the creative, fulfilling nature of "work." Additionally, curriculum planning should be directed toward preparing students for living as well as livelihoods. Implementation of these directions can be achieved by using the language of the humanities, I.E., the expression of "purposiveness and drama," as opposed to the factual objectivity of scientific language, in improving existing courses and creating new ones. Within the classroom, emphasis on the distinction between "job" and "work" provides a common goal for both students and teachers, and thus prevents student disinterest and faculty discouragement. To help community college teachers meet the challenges that face them, they should be rewarded for outside, "entrepreneurial" work such as writing or painting; they should be given opportunities for "creative disengagement" from their college assignments; and they should be evaluated in terms broader than the number of hours spent in the classroom.
