Auditory physiology by Aage R Møller( Book )

14 editions published between 1982 and 2012 in English and held by 321 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Auditory Physiology describes the functions of the ear and the auditory nervous system, using well-documented research work. This book explains the physiology of the ear, the general function of the auditory nervous system, and its anatomy. This text also discusses in detail the neurophysiological basis for discriminating frequency and time. This discrimination refers in particular to (1) the ability to distinguish two sounds on the basis of their frequencies when the two sounds are not presented at the same time; and (2) the ability to discriminate one spectral component in a complex sound th

Reprogramming of the brain by Aage R Møller( Book )

13 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 180 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The brain is plastic and it can change its function to adapt to changing demands of various kinds. The brain can also re-organize and change its function to better utilize its resources when parts of the brain have been damaged through injuries and diseases. This means that the brain is not "hard wired" but can be reprogrammed when needed. This book describes different aspects of how the plasticity can become activated and how it can benefit the individual person. This book provides in-depth coverage of many important aspects of neural plasticity and how it applies to trauma, including strokes and disorders of the central nervous system that affect memory and cognition. The book also discusses how neural plasticity is involved in aphasia, pain and tinnitus. The roles of neural plasticity in motor rehabilitation and in adaptation to prostheses such as cochlear and cochlear nucleus implants are also topics of the book. Provides in-depth coverage of many important aspects of neural plasticity and how it applies to trauma, including strokes and disorders of the central nervous system that affect memory and cognition. Discusses how neural plasticity is involved in aphasia, pain and tinnitus. Explains the roles of neural plasticity in motor rehabilitation and prosthesis such as cochlear and cochlear nucleus implants

Cochlear and brainstem implants by Aage R Møller( Book )

15 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 166 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Today cochlear implants are the most successful of all prostheses of the nervous system. They are used in individuals who are deaf or suffer from a severe hearing deficiency caused by loss of cochlear hair cells. Auditory brainstem implants provide stimulation of the cochlear nucleus and are used in patients with an auditory nerve dysfunction, a deformed cochlea which does not allow cochlear implantation, or traumatic auditory nerve injury. In this volume different aspects of cochlear implantation such as the role of neural plasticity, the interaction with the development of the auditory system, and the optimal time of implantation in children (sensitive periods) are discussed in detail. Further, the processors and the algorithms used in modern cochlear implants are described The second part is devoted to auditory brainstem implants. It describes surgical techniques, methods for intraoperative testing as well as speech processing. It also deals with electrical stimulation of neural tissue and the neurophysiologic basis for cochlear and brainstem implants. The publication provides the latest scientific and clinical knowledge on cochlear and brainstem implants and is highly recommended to audiologists, otolaryngologists and also neurosurgeons
Evoked potentials in intraoperative monitoring by Aage R Møller( Book )

5 editions published in 1988 in English and held by 104 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Textbook of tinnitus by Aage R Møller( Book )

18 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in English and held by 67 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Groundbreaking, comprehensive, and developed by a panel of leading international experts in the field, textbook provides a multidisciplinary overview of the diagnosis and management of this widespread and troubling disorder. Importantly, the book emphasizes that tinnitus is not one disease but a group of rather diverse disorders with different pathophysiology, different causes and, consequently, different treatments. This comprehensive title is written for clinicians and researchers by clinicians and researchers who are active in the field. It is logically organized in six sections and will be of interest to otolaryngologists, neurologists, psychiatrists, neurosurgeons, primary care clinicians, audiologists and psychologists. This book describes both the theoretical background of the different forms of tinnitus and it provides detailed knowledge of the state-of-the-art of its treatment. Because of its organization and its extensive subject index, this textbook can also serve as a reference for clinicians who do not treat tinnitus patients routinely
The malleable brain : benefits and harm from plasticity of the brain by Aage R Møller( Book )

11 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 55 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book describes a fascinating aspect of the brain and the spinal cord, namely that the brain is malleable which means that the way it works can be changed. Something changes in the brain whenever we learn something, but changes also happens when training to reach new skills. Rehabilitation after strokes and trauma is successful because it brings on changes in the way the brain functions. It is the brain's ability to change its functions that makes it possible to use prostheses of different kinds such as cochlear implants that can make deaf people hear. The young brain is more malleable than it is later in life. It also discusses these two very different roles of neural plasticity, one that is beneficial and one that causes harm and diseases; it discusses the sparse knowledge about the role of neural plasticity in other disorders and it speculate that neural plasticity may be involved in addictions of various kinds and in diseases such as depression."--Jacket
Hemifacial spasm : a multidisciplinary approach by Marc Sindou( Book )

4 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 40 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Idiopathic Hemifacial Spasm constitutes a severe disability both from a cosmetic and psychological point of view and functionally for the daily life. Until recently this peculiar disease had remained enigmatous and was resistant to any kinds of treatments. Over the last two decades important advances have been made in the comprehension of its mechanisms and the efficacy of its treatment. Botulinic toxin revealed to be helpful although its effects are most often transient. Microvascular decompression - suppressing the neuro-vascular conflict almost constantly found at the root exit zone of the facial nerve from the brain stem - has been recognized as the curative treatment of this disease. A wide range of specialists, namely neurologists, ophthalmologists, ENT-surgeons, clinical neurophysiologists, neuroradiologists and of course neurosurgeons are involved in the diagnosis and the management of Hemifacial Spasm and will be interested in this multidisciplinary review of the topic

Pain : its anatomy, physiology and treatment by Aage R Møller( Book )

6 editions published between 2011 and 2014 in English and held by 15 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The book provides a multidisciplinary, comprehensive, and broad coverage of up-to-date knowledge about the anatomical and physiological bases for many forms of pain. The role of neuroplasticity in many forms of pain is discussed. The main types of pain -- pain that is caused by stimulation of pain receptors in normal tissue (physiological pain) and pain that is caused by pathological processes and change in the function of the spinal cord and the brain (pathological pain)-- are discussed in separate Sections. The book is suitable for anybody interested in pain; a person who has pain will find information that may relate to his/her own pain. Pain is complex; it can be an adverse phenomenon that deserves treatment, but at the same time, some forms of pain are absolutely necessary for a normal life. Pain is a fascinating yet frightening subject, from wherever and however it is viewed. It has emotional features and medical features. Pain can last a short time (acute pain) or it can last a long time (chronic pain). The book is derived from my many years of teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses on the "Biology of Pain" in the Neuroscience Program of the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences at The University of Texas at Dallas
