On June 22, 1954, in Columbia, S.C., Sarah Mae Flemming was treated roughly by a bus driver when she attempted to exit the bus though the front door rather than through the back as specified by law. She later sued the South Carolina Electric and Gas Company, owner of the system. Her courageous action was one of the first in the civil rights struggle which ultimately led to the Montgomery bus boycott and the integration of public transportation systems in the South
