Performance mechanisms of fire walls at high temperatures by V Chandrasekaran( Book )

1 edition published in 1994 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The performance of concrete masonry walls exposed to fire and pressure loading have been analysed. The analysis is based on a two-step non-linear finite element analysis technique. In the first step, the performance of the wall as a thermal barrier is investigated using transient thermal analysis procedures. In the second step, the stress-displacement characteristics of the wall is determined using nonlinear finite element analysis. The variations of different properties with temperatures and loading levels have been considered in the analyses. The theoretical investigations have been carried out for different wall heights and thicknesses. The computed results have been compared with the experimentally observed temperature profiles and displacements obtained when a series of concrete masonry walls were subjected to the fire resistance test of ISO 834. The computed and experimental data show close agreement. The thermal barrier efficiencies of the concrete masonry block have been discussed. The various factors which control the structural performance of walls exposed to fire are discussed. The information provided on the performance of walls under fire conditions is appropriate for practising fire safety engineers
Performance of steel columns exposed to fire( Book )

1 edition published in 1994 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Steel columns are used in many high rise as well as industrial constructions. These columns act as the main load carrying member. In this paper results of analytical studies carried out to evaluate the performance mechanisms of steel columns exposed to fire have been presented. The finite element method is used to analyse the buckling behaviour of geometrically perfect steel columns at elevated temperatures. The column behaviour up to collapse was investigated considering geometric as well as material non-linearities. The analysis includes non-linear material characteristics as a function of temperature. The importance of proper idealisation of stress strain temperature behaviour has been brought out. The buckling characteristics of columns have been analysed for continuous stress-strain-temperature material behaviour as well as elasto-plastic bilinear idealisations. The influence of slenderness ratios was found to control the buckling behaviour of columns at elevated temperatures. Solutions have been provided to evaluate critical stresses of columns with different end fixity conditions. The factors which control the performance of columns exposed to fire have been discussed Comparisons have been made with other analytical approaches and available experimental data. It is believed that the fire safety engineer will be benefited from these studies
