Natural climate variability on decade-to-century time scales by Climate Research Committee( )

9 editions published between 1995 and 1996 in English and held by 1,819 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume reflects the current state of scientific knowledge about natural climate variability on decade-to-century time scales. It covers a wide range of relevant subjects, including the characteristics of the atmosphere and ocean environments as well as the methods used to describe and analyze them, such as proxy data and numerical models. They clearly demonstrate the range, persistence, and magnitude of climate variability as represented by many different indicators. Not only do natural climate variations have important socioeconomic effects, but they must be better understood before possible anthropogenic effects (from greenhouse gas emissions, for instance) can be evaluated. A topical essay introduces each of the disciplines represented, providing the nonscientist with a perspective on the field and linking the papers to the larger issues in climate research. In its conclusions section, the book evaluates progress in the different areas and makes recommendations for the direction and conduct of future climate research. This book, while consisting of technical papers, is also accessible to the interested layperson
Capacity of U.S. climate modeling to support climate change assessment activities by National Research Council (U.S.)( )

6 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 1,785 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

GOALS, Global Ocean-Atmosphere-Land System, for predicting seasonal-to-interannual climate : a program of observation, modeling, and analysis by National Research Council (U. S.)( )

3 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 1,720 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book presents a strategy for improving the understanding and prediction of climate variations on seasonal-to-interannual time scales. It proposes the launching of a major international research program called Global Ocean-Atmosphere-Land System (GOALS). GOALS builds on the successes of the Tropical Ocean and Global Atmosphere program by broadening the geographic scope from the tropical Pacific to the global tropics and, eventually, to the entire globe
Comments on catalyzing U.S. World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) activities by Climate Research Committee( )

3 editions published between 2000 and 2001 in English and held by 1,342 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Describing socioeconomic futures for climate change research and assessment : report of a workshop by National Research Council (U.S.)( )

2 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 1,229 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The implications of climate change for the environment and society depend on the rate and magnitude of climate change, but also on changes in technology, economics, lifestyles, and policy that will affect the capacity both for limiting and adapting to climate change. Describing Socioeconomic Futures for Climate Change Research and Assessment reviews the state of science for considering socioeconomic changes over long time frames and clarifies definitions and concepts to facilitate communication across research communities. The book also explores driving forces and key uncertainties that will affect impacts, adaptation, vulnerability and mitigation in the future. Furthermore, it considers research needs and the elements of a strategy for describing socioeconomic and environmental futures for climate change research and assessment. Describing Socioeconomic Futures for Climate Change Research and Assessment explores the current state of science in scenario development and application, asserting that while little attention has been given to preparing quantitative and narrative socioeconomic information, advances in computing capacity are making development of such probabilistic scenarios a reality. It also addresses a number of specific methodological challenges and opportunities and discusses opportunities for a next round of assessments."--Publisher's description

Thinking strategically : the appropriate use of metrics for the climate change science program( )

1 edition published in 2005 in English and held by 546 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Climate Change Science Program (CCSP) and its predecessor U.S. Global Change Research Program have sponsored climate research and observations for nearly 15 years, yet the overall progress of the program has not been measured systematically. Metrics a system of measurement that includes the item being measured, the unit of measurement, and the value of the unit offer a tool for measuring such progress; improving program performance; and demonstrating program successes to Congress, the Office of Management and Budget, and the public. This report lays out a framework for creating and implementing metrics for the CCSP. A general set of metrics provides a starting point for identifying the most important measures, and the principles provide guidance for refining the metrics and avoiding unintended consequences
Radiative forcing of climate change : expanding the concept and addressing uncertainties by National Research Council Staff( Book )
