A two-part program on the history of the Middle East region in the twentieth century. "The fall of the Ottoman Empire, the French and British domination, the two world wars, the birth of Israel, the Suez Crisis, the years of American and Russian imperialism, the Arab-Israeli conflicts and the Palestine issue, are some of the major events which took place before the Gulf War broke out. To all this must be added the exeptional development in oil production and the major role it plays in the world economies."--Containers

3 editions published between 1986 and 1989 in French and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This research which tries to deal with social history, endeavors to present the different Muslim classes of the Tunis society belonging to the notability whether through their social, political positions or through their leading activities in the urban trade and production. The structures and frameworks of these classes (namely the urban framework, living conditions, relations, alliances, revenues, private patrimonies and waqfs, traditional and modern urban institutions, religious, ones), all these are seen within their evolutionary movement with regard to the deep changes due to the economic and political conjunctures of the 2nd half of the 19th century (namely the European penetration and the creation of the protectorat system). The relationships of these Muslim elites with the political power and with other social categories of Tunis (whether Muslim or not) are also taken up. Having both used private and unpublished records as well as public ones, this research endeavors to focus, through the study of its elites, on an urban and Muslim society, that of Tunis, on the eve of the 20th century

2 editions published in 1989 in French and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The development of the "ithna 'ashara" theoretical basis of shi'ism made increasing political role of shi'i ulama possible from nineteenth century. This role strengthened in particular through the fight against despotism of Persian and ottoman rulers, for the establishment of an Islamic constitutional regime, as through the resistance against political, economic and cultural hegemony of Europe. It is in the name of the protection of the independence of the Islamic territories that the Shi'a religious leaders called the Muslims for jihad against the British invasion of Iraq in 1914. From the holy cities, these leaders took charge of the movement against British occupation and mandate. They will be the most uncompromising force hostile to the British throughout the period of the establishment of the British dominion which lead to the advent of the Hashemite regime in 1920. Only superior military force of Great Britain could result in the defeat of the Shi'a religious leaders whose opposition was reduced to silence, from 1924

Louis Massignon et l'islam by Pierre Rocalve( )

2 editions published in 2013 in French and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Islam is the 'personalization axis' around which Louis Massignon's life and works were centered. Arising out of his research on al-Ḥallāğ and sufism, Massignon's vision of Islam focused on the 'sacred
