Martin Van Buren : the romantic age of American politics by John Niven( Book )

13 editions published between 1983 and 2012 in English and held by 1,578 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

They called him "the Magician," "the Red Fox" and other names that celebrated his pollitical skill. And, indeed, there is no doubt that Martin Van Buren was the most innovative politician of his age. In the first modern biography of the eighth President, John Niven reveals a man who was preeminently a statesman - not just a superb practitioner of the art of the possible, as he is commonly depicted. First prominient in New York politics, Van Buren served as Andrew Jackson's Secretary of State and later as his vice president. The balance wheel of the administration, he was Jackson's most influential adviser. His own presidency (1837-1841) was beset by the worst depression the United States had yet faced, but, as Niven shows, Van Buren met the crisis with courage. His corrective measures incensed the finandial community but save the public credit. Defeated in the 1840 election, he was denied the Democratic nomination in 1844, for opposing on moral grounds, the immediate annexation of Texas. In 1848, as the presidential candidate for the anti-slavery Free Soil Party, he again lent his name to an unpopular cause he felt was right. Charming, witty, enigmatic, Van Buren could hold his own with the other key political figures of his day: Jackson, Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, John C. Calhoun, John Quincy Adams. Correcting many false images of Van Buren (including the view that he was a compromiser on the slavery issue), this authoritative biography unveils a brilliant career in American political life, set against the backdrop of a fascinating era. --Book jacket

Salmon P. Chase : a biography by John Niven( Book )

11 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 872 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Salmon P. Chase was one of the preeminent men of nineteenth-century America. A majestic figure, tall and stately, Chase was a leader in the fight to end slavery, a brilliant administrator who as Lincoln's Secretary of the Treasury provided crucial funding for a vastly expensive war. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court during the turmoil of Reconstruction, he was the presiding officer of the impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson. Yet he was also a complex figure. As John Niven reveals in this magisterial biography, Chase was a paradoxical blend of idealism and ambition. If he stood for the highest moral purposes--the freedom and equality of all mankind--these lofty motives failed to mask a thirst for power so deeply ingrained in his character that it drove away many who shared his principles, but invariably mistrusted his motives. What emerges is a portrait of a tragic figure, whose high qualities of heart and mind and whose many achievements were ultimately tarnished by an often unseemly quest for power. It is a striking look at an eminent statesman as well as a revealing glimpse into political life of nineteenth-century America, all set against a background of the antislavery movement, the Civil War, and the turmoil of Reconstruction

Connecticut for the Union : the role of the State in the Civil War by John Niven( Book )

8 editions published in 1965 in English and held by 550 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Connecticut in 1861 was more a land of contrast than of tradition. The author shows that beneath her placid exterior, the pressure of drastic social and economic change had been building up for thirty years. He argues that the explosion in 1861, as far as Connecticut was concerned, was atleast partially due to the sudden release of purely local forces. Focusing attention on the youth of the state- those who would and did bear arms- the author sees a conscious effort on their part to break out of a situation that had become intolerable. Their idealistic aspirations, their revolt against the status quo, their naive desire for adventure in the great Union crusade was as much a result of social chaos at home was a response to nationalistic and patriotic fervor. That theme is carried into the recruitment and training of the army and is mirrored in its leadership and battle record. The military chapters are organized to indicate the concentric rings of pressure that were tightened around the Confederacy, and to demonstrate the activity of Connecticut troops in all major theaters of operation. Other sections deal with the impact of war on the state's economy and social values and on the social and economic consequences of peace. -- from Book Jacket

This book explores the interrelated themes of modernization and slavery, issues that created reform movements in the North, defensive sectionalism in the South, social disruption, and a general failure of political leadership. During this period the Union underwent the increasing strains of uneven social and economic development. Modernization and slavery provide the backdrop for the action and reaction of northern and southern players who sought but ultimately failed to allow an accommodation that would let competing social
