Vienna - Berlin : the art of two cities( Book )

5 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 142 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is the first publication to compare and contrast the artistic traditions in Berlin and Vienna during the birth of the Modernist movement. From the beginning of the 20th century to the period between the two world wars, Berlin and Vienna witnessed an explosion of artistic productivity and experimentation. Featuring works by Schiele, Hausmann, Hoffmann, Kokoschka, Dix, Grosz, Liebermann, Kirchner, and others, this volume documents how two very different cities developed artistic traditions that were unique to their individual cultures, while at the same time borrowing from each other’s accomplishments. Starting with the Secessionist movements of both cities, this generously illustrated volume compares and contrasts Berlin’s realism with Vienna’s ornamentalism. World War I led to greater proximity between the two nations and to active artistic exchanges between them, both in relation to the rise of the Neue Sachlichkeit or New Objectivity and, in particular, in the context of stagecraft. Gaining in influence at the same time was Viennese kineticism, whose counterpart in Berlin was the Dada movement, which examined contemporary social issues in a critical and subversive manner. Designed to echo the stylistic elements of the early 20th century, this beautiful and unique book traces an important cultural exchange that helped shape both cities and had lasting effects on the development of modern art

"The American-born Dorothy Iannone occupies a distinct place as an artist in the second half of the twentieth century. This retrospective catalogue illustrates the intermediality and radical subjectivty of this unique artistic opus, and aims to highlight the innovative energy of Dorothy Iannone's art, revealing the art historical implications of her imagery. The catalogue contains around two hundred illustrations of her works as wll as numerous photographs from the artists' personal archive, which are published here for the first time."

Gerhard Richter : abstraction by Gerhard Richter( Book )

1 edition published in 2018 in English and held by 101 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This publication is the first to focus solely on the abstract strategies and processes contained in Gerhard Richter's body of work. In the early 1960s, the artist began to call painting into question, an exploration that continues to occupy him to this day. In the 1970s, he responded to the rejection of painting by creating a series of monochrome works in gray. Moreover, he viewed the color gray as a means of addressing political themes without depicting them in an idealized manner. In his Inpainting series of the 1970s, Richter made brushstrokes and the application of paint his subject. In other works, he photographed small details from his palette and transferred them onto large canvases in a photorealistic manner. In his color charts, he subjected painting to an objective process by leaving the arrangement of the colors to chance. Since 1976, Richter has created a series of abstract works by applying paint with a brush, scraper, and palette knife, alternating between conscious decision-making and random processes
Erwin Wurm : bei Mutti by Erwin Wurm( Book )

3 editions published in 2016 in German and held by 73 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Freedom : the art of the Novembergruppe 1918-1935( Book )

2 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 66 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the wake of World War I and the German Revolution of November 1918, a group of German artists, architects, composers, and writers banded together to work toward a democratic society that would reflect the values of the Weimar constitution. Some of the most celebrated artists of the period were members or participated in their numerous exhibitions, including Otto Dix, Max Ernst, Walter Gropius, George Grosz, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Hannah Hoech, and Piet Mondrian. In an effort to reflect the liberal values of Germany's newly established socialist government, the group was open to all styles, from Cubism, Futurism, and Expressionism to Dada, Abstraction, and New Objectivity. Until their dissolution in 1935, when they were banned by the Nazi regime, they exhibited nearly 3,000 works throughout the country. This book focuses on three distinct periods over the course of the group's history. Each section features essays and a series of elegantly reproduced illustrations. Presenting over one hundred works, this compilation offers new perspectives on the avant-garde art of Weimar Germany, its socio-utopian ideals, and its attempts to build bridges inside the artistic community as well as between the artists and their fellow citizens

Friedrich Seidenstücker : von Nilpferden und anderen Menschen : Fotografien, 1925-1958 = Of hippos and other humans : photographs, 1925-1958 by Friedrich Seidenstücker( Book )

1 edition published in 2011 in German and held by 49 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ausstellung: Berlinische Galerie, Berlin 29.9.2011-30.1.2012

"Le Vele di Scampia" is a futuristic housing estate in northern Naples and a Camorra battlefield. Conceived by Francesco di Salvo in the late seventies and widely recognized for their urbanistic, "Le Vele" (The Sails) were squatted by mafia families even before completion. Today the building complex is a symbol of the Camorra's power in the Naples region and a key centre of European drug trafficking. The book "Vele" is based on this animation film with an selection of 287 single images.--Publisher
