From head to hand : art and the manual by David Levi Strauss( )

18 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 2,162 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In his third book, Strauss delves into the mysterious process whereby an idea is born in the mind and materialized through the hand in the expression of an artwork. How exactly does this happen? It's a question so basic, an act so fundamental to art-making, that it has rarely received attention. It makes an ideal topic for Strauss, a writer with an exceptional ability to animate art's philosophical dimensions in a clear, persuasive manner. During this time when craft and the direct manipulation of materials by the artist appear to be in eclipse, Strauss comes to their defense in a spirited cri de coeur. Featuring over 35 illustrations, the book examines a wide variety of media and individual examples. It explores the works of sculptors Martin Puryear, Ursula von Rydingsvard, and Donald Lipski; painters Leon Golub and Ron Gorchov; and writers Robert Duncan, Robert Kelly, Guy Davenport, John Berger, and Leo Steinberg. In addition, there are essays on Joseph Beuys's 7,000 Oaks in Ireland, contemporary Haida carvers Reg Davidson, and Jim Hart, Cecilia Vicun̋a's "memory of the fingers," and the influence of curators Harald Szeemann and Walter Hopps on the staging of contemporary art exhibitions
Between the eyes : essays on photography and politics by David Levi Strauss( Book )

23 editions published between 2003 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 723 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In Between the Eyes, David Levi Strauss examines subjects ranging from "Photography and Propaganda" to the ephemeral imagery of dreams; from Sebastiao Salgado's epic social documents to the profoundly personal photographic revelations of Francesca Woodman. In "A Ferocious Philosophy," Walt Whitman, George Eastman, and Paul Virilio sit down to an imagined conversation about democracy and images. The timely issue of photographic "legitimacy" is addressed in "Photography and Belief," and in "The Highest Degree of Illusion," Strauss looks at the media frenzy surrounding the tragic events of September 11, 2001"--Jacket

Francesca Woodman by Francesca Woodman( Book )

3 editions published in 1998 in English and French and held by 349 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the thirty years since her death, FrancescaWoodmans work has retained an undeniable immediacy and continues to inspire a cult-like following of admirers.Woodman began photographing at the age of thirteen. By the time she enrolled at the Rhode Island School of Design in 1975, she was already an accomplished photographer with a remarkably mature and focused approach to her work. At the age of twenty-two, she committed suicide. Woodman might be merely a tragic footnote in the history of photography were it not for the startlingly compelling, complex and artistically resolved body of work she produced during her short career. Her oeuvre represents a remarkably rich and singular exploration of the human body in space and of the genre of self-portraiture in particular. Her practice assimilated and advanced aspects of feminist theory, Conceptualist practice, and performance art. Thus, a close re-examination of the maturation and reception of Woodmans artistic vision presents an important and timely opportunity to reassess the heady artistic moment during which she came of age. This catalogue, produced by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in conjunction with the first major American exhibition of the artists work in more than two decades, promises to be a landmark reconsideration of Woodman for the twenty-first century. It will paint a fuller picture of her oeuvre than has previously been available, spanning her earliest student experiments to her late, large-scale blueprint studies of caryatid-like figures for the massive Temple Project, and her experiments with fashion photography. The exhibition will bring to light many photographs that have never before been exhibited or published, and the book will focus on these and other vintage prints that theWoodman estate is making available for this exhibition and publication. These rare prints will allow audiences to appreciateWoodmans skill as a printer, and to grasp the importance of the final print to her artistic vision. Through all of these means, Francesca Woodman will examine why her photographs continue to be so profoundly affective many decades after their making

Words not spent today buy smaller images tomorrow : essays on the present and future of photography by David Levi Strauss( Book )

8 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 242 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"At this transitional moment in the field of photography, how should we consider what is to come for the medium? Can its past and present practitioners help guide us, both as creators and as observers? David Levi Strauss--eminent author, critic, and teacher--rises to the challenge of these questions and more in Words Not Spent Today Buy Smaller Images Tomorrow: Essays on the Past and Future of Photography. In the course of twenty-five essays, some of which appear for the first time in this volume, Strauss discusses the work of artists who provoke us with revealing, clear-eyed investigations of the ostensibly patent world in front of us, and others who transport us to new realms, poetic and unreal--creative minds ranging from Frederick Sommer, Helen Levitt, Daido Moriyama, and Joseph Beuys to contemporary photographers Sally Mann, James Nachtwey, Susan Meiselas, Tim Davis, and many others. Also considered are the groundbreaking theoretical writings of Susan Sontag and Jean-Luc Nancy, the films of Chris Marker and Stan Brakhage, and issues and events that have irrevocably altered the way we consider the medium of photography and how it communicates: 9/11, Abu Ghraib, the death of Osama bin Laden, the Arab Spring, and Occupy Wall Street."--Publisher's description

Co-illusion : dispatches from the end of communication by David Levi Strauss( )

8 editions published in 2020 in English and Undetermined and held by 140 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Strauss offers dispatches from the epicenter of our constitutional earthquake, writing first from the 2016 Democratic and Republican conventions and then from the campaign. After the election, he switches gears, writing in the voices of the regime and of those complicit in its actions-from the thoughts of the President himself ("I am not a mistake. I am not a fluke, or a bug in the system. I am the System") to the reflections of a nameless billionaire tech CEO whose initials may or may not be M.Z. Finally, Strauss shows us how we might repair the damage to the public imaginary after Trump exits the scene. Photographs by celebrated documentary photographers Susan Meiselas and Peter van Agtmael accompany the texts

The exhibition as a whole takes a layered, archaeological approach to this artist and poet who weaves across barriers and between media, (particularly between visual art and language). Her work is a powerful fusion of a knowledge of a colonial Chilean and local Andean culture and the quest for a global avant-garde. --Gallery description

Photography and belief by David Levi Strauss( Book )

7 editions published between 1991 and 2021 in English and Italian and held by 70 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this exploration of contemporary photography, David Levi Strauss questions the concept that "seeing is believing." Identifying a recent shift in the dominance of photography, Strauss looks at the power of the medium in the age of Photoshop, smartphones, and the internet, asking important questions about how we look and what we trust. In the first 'ekphrasis' title on photography, Strauss challenges the aura of believability and highlights the potential dangers around this status. He examines how images produced on cameras gradually gained an inordinate power to influence public opinion, prompt action, comfort and assuage, and direct or even create desire. How and why do we believe technical images the way we do? Offering a poignant argument in the era of "deepfakes," Strauss draws attention to new changes in the technology of seeing. Some uses of "technical images" are causing the connection between images and belief (between seeing and believing) to fray and pull apart. How is this shifting our relationship to images? Will this crisis in what we can believe come to threaten our very purchase on the real? This book is an inquiry into the history and future of our belief in images
