Ceremony and ritual in Japan : religious practices in an industrialized society by D. P Martinez( )

28 editions published between 1994 and 2013 in English and held by 1,971 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Japan is one of the most urbanised and industrialised countries in the world. Yet the Japanese continue to practise a variety of religious rituals and ceremonies despite the high-tech, highly regimented nature of Japanese society. Ceremony and Ritual in Japan focuses on the traditional and religious aspects of Japanese society from an anthropological perspective, presenting new material and making cross-cultural comparisons. The chapters in this collection cover topics as diverse as funerals and mourning, sweeping, women's roles in ritual, the division of ceremonial foods into bitter and sweet

Asian anthropology by Jan van Bremen( Book )

17 editions published between 2004 and 2009 in English and held by 333 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Asian Anthropology raises important questions regarding the nature of anthropology, and particularly the production and consumption of anthropological knowledge in Asia. Instead of assuming a universal standard or trajectory for the development of anthropology in Asia, the contributors to this volume begin with the appropriate premise that anthropologies in different Asian countries have developed and continue to develop according to their own internal dynamics."--Jacket

7 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 138 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This collection of essays represents the first interdisciplinary study in English to consider social memory in Japan across a wide range of issues and phenomena. Unlike previous studies which have focused on isolated topics, especially Second World War events, this volume examines in depth a variety of memorialization subjects, including music and poetry, artefacts and tools, oral testimonies and written documents, stones and performances, rivers and earthquakes, ritual and ceremonies as well as art and artists."--BOOK JACKET

Anthropology and colonialism in asia : comparative and historical colonialism by Jan van Bremen( )

4 editions published between 1999 and 2014 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

For a time it was almost a cliche to say that anthropology was a handmaiden of colonialism - by which was usually meant 'Western' colonialism. And this insinuation was assumed to somehow weaken the theoretical claims of anthropology and its fieldwork achievements. What this collection demonstrates is that colonialism was not only a Western phenomenon, but 'Eastern' as well. And that Japanese or Chinese anthropologists were also engaged in studying subject peoples. But wherever they were and whoever they were anthropologists always had a complex and problematic relationship with the colon
