Gilbert Keith Chesterton encarna, según Ezra Pound, la masa de gente corriente, ese núcleo popular donde se enraíza, como decía el propio Chesterton, todo lo realmente valioso de un país. Quizá sea ésta la clave para explicar la enorme audiencia de que han disfrutado y siguen disfrutando hoy sus libros. Chesterton fue un escritor muy prolífico: biografías, crítica literaria, filosofía, dramas, novelas, historias policíacas, versos. Ilustró gráficamente obras de sus amigos y fue además un orador elocuente. Su estampa física colosal, enorme, fue fiel reflejo de su ingente capacidad intelectual. «El regreso de Don Quijote» culmina una etapa de la obra de Chesterton que la crítica ha llamado período quijotesco. El autor defiende la cordura del caballero contra la locura del mundo que aceptamos por canónico. En su novela habla de la locura infecciosa, de aquella que aqueja a un grupo de aficionados que preparan una obra de teatro sobre una leyenda medieval y que, una vez terminada la función, se niegan a abandonar sus ropas medievales y pretenden instaurar en Inglaterra el antiguo orden de la caballería. En «El regreso de Don Quijote» se dan cita buena parte de los temas políticos que preocupaban al autor por aquellas fechas, a la vez que se procura dar un correcto entendimiento del mito quijotesco
