Containing nationalism by Michael Hechter( )

29 editions published between 2000 and 2010 in English and Italian and held by 2,332 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Containing Nationalism offers a unified explanation of the dynamics of nationalism across the broad sweep of time and space. Among other things, it explains why nationalism is supported by specific forms of inequality between cultural groups, and why it is inclusive at some times and exclusive at others." "Containing Nationalism argues that the impetus for the most common type of nationalism arises from the imposition of direct rule in culturally heterogeneous societies. The book suggests that political institutions that reintroduce indirect rule offer the leaders of modern countries the best available means of containing nationalist violence within their borders."--Jacket

Principles of group solidarity by Michael Hechter( )

24 editions published between 1987 and 2003 in English and Japanese and held by 1,274 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Social scientists have long recognized that solidarity is essential for such phenomena as social order, class, and ethnic consciousness, and the provision of collective goods. In presenting a new general theory of group solidarity, Michael Hechter here contends that it is indeed possible to build a theory of solidarity based on the action of rational individuals and in doing so he goes beyond the timeworn disciplinary boundaries separating the various social sciences
Internal colonialism : the Celtic fringe in British national development, 1536-1966 by Michael Hechter( Book )

50 editions published between 1972 and 2017 in English and held by 1,037 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Recent years have seen a resurgence of separatist sentiments among national minorities in many industrial societies, including the United Kingdom. In 1997, the Scottish and Welsh both set up their own parliamentary bodies, while the tragic events in Northern Ireland are a daily reminder of the Irish problem. These phenomena call into question widely accepted social theories which assume that ethnic attachments in a society will wane as industrialization proceeds." "This book presents the social basis of ethnic identity, and examines changes in the strength of ethnic solidarity in the United Kingdom in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In addition to its value as a case study, the work also has important comparative implications, for it suggests that internal colonialism of the kind experienced in the British Isles has its analogues in the histories of other industrial societies." "The study concludes that ethnic solidarity will inevitably emerge among groups which are relegated to inferior positions in a cultural division of labor. This is an important contribution to the understanding of socioeconomic development and ethnicity."--Jacket

The Origin of values by Michael Hechter( Book )

12 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 426 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Although values play a leading role in nearly every explanatory theory in the broad realm of the social and behavioral sciences, very little multidisciplinary research material on values is available. Addressing this need, the editors bring together distinguished social scientists, psychologists, and biologists who collaboratively explore fundamental questions about values: What are the determinants of social values, taboos, and ideologies? What are the determinants of individual values? What is the nature of motivations and rewards? Is there an evolutionary basis for the development of values?"--Back cover

This dataset contains census, election, and vital statistics data for 118 British and Irish counties for the period 1851 to 1966. The information was collected for use in a study of regional integration and development in Great Britain in the 19th and 20th centuries. Included are population indicators for each of the counties recorded at 11 points in time during the 115-year span (i.e., 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901, 1911, 1921, 1931, 1951, and 1961). Specific information includes indicators of population density and change, ethnic composition, proportion of election votes for Labour, Conservative, Liberal, and various nationalist parties, and proportion of population employed in areas such as agriculture, manufacturing, civil service, and (female) domestic work. Other data include number of Celtic speakers, literacy, religiosity, nativity (i.e., English-, Welsh-, Scottish-, Irish-, and French-born), sex ratio (female to male), birth rates, infant mortality rates, marriage rates, per capita income, and proportion of middle class ...
