"This is the magnificent account of the people of that exotic land, the Caucasus, their heroic leader Shamyl and their courageous thirty year fight to stem the tide of Russian imperialism. It is also a history of 19th century Russian expansion that does much to explain the Russian character and the foreign policy of the modern-day Soviet Union. But above all it is the incredible story of one man, Shamyl, who personifies freedom fighting single-handed against autocracy and tyranny"--Back cover

Hard-pressed for money in middle age, she sold her memoirs after offering to edit out any lovers who paid her the sum of [pound]200 . . . Publish and be damned!' cried the Duke of Wellington. She did and she was."--BOOK JACKET

This charming little book was first published in 1956 when people in England were still enduring post-war restrictions on both traveling and eating. As Lesley Blanch says in her introduction to a later edition 'benign fate whisked me elsewhere to follow less restricted ways, traveling widely and eating wildly.' She said: 'I don't belong in England, I don't belong anywhere, it is rather restful ... I have met everybody and known nobody.' Seductive and piquant like its author, this is 'an appetizer for enthusiastic beginners' rather than a basic cookbook. Lesley Blanch's gastronomic world tour inc

"Russia seized the imagination of Lesley Blanch when she was still a child. A mysterious traveler, swathed in Siberian furs, bearing Faberge eggs and icons as gifts, and full of Russian fairy tales and fairy tales of Russia, came to visit her parents and left her starry-eyed. Years later the same man returned to sweep her off her feet. Her love affair with the Traveler, as she calls him here, transformed her life and fueled an abiding fascination with Russia and Russian culture, one that would lead her to dingy apartments reeking of cabbage soup and piroshkis on the outskirts of Paris in the 1960s; to Siberia and beyond--journeying deep into the romantic terrain of the mind's eye. Part travel book, part love story, Lesley Blanch's memoir is pure intoxication"--

On the wilder shores of love : a Bohemian life by Lesley Blanch( Book )

7 editions published between 2015 and 2018 in English and French and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Most famous for The Wilder Shores of Love, her book about four women travellers, Lesley Blanch was a scholarly romantic and a bold writer. Her lifelong passion was for Russia, the Balkans and the Middle East. At heart a nomad, she spent the greater part of her life travelling the remote areas her books record so vividly. Born in 1904, she died aged 103, having gone from being a household name to a mysterious and neglected living legend. She was writing about her eccentric Edwardian childhood at her death and that work, never before published, now forms the beginning of this wonderful memoir. Lesley Blanch chose to 'escape the boredom of convention': having first worked as a theatre designer and illustrator, she became British Vogue's features editor during World War II and then, in 1946 she sailed from England to travel the world with her diplomat-novelist husband, Romain Gary. By the time they reached Hollywood in the late 1950s they were literary celebrities. When Gary left her for the young actress, Jean Seberg, Blanch headed East and travelled across Siberia, Outer Mongolia, Turkey, Iran, Samarkand, Afghanistan, Egypt, the Sahara, making her mark as an indefatigable and generous travel writer. Edited by her goddaughter Georgia de Chamberet, who was working with her in her centenary year, this book collects together the story of Blanch's marriage, previously published only in French; a selection of her journalism which brings to life the artistic melting pot that was London between the wars; and a selection of her most evocative travel pieces, to create the story of a fascinating, bohemian - and, at times outrageous - life that spanned the twentieth century. Illustrated with photos alongside a selection of line drawings by Lesley Blanch

Liebe kennt ihren Ort : Schauplätze großer Leidenschaften by Lesley Blanch( Book )

3 editions published in 2011 in German and Undetermined and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
