Algebraic surfaces and holomorphic vector bundles by
Robert Friedman(
Book
)
19 editions published between 1998 and 2013 in English and German and held by 380 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book covers the theory of algebraic surfaces and holomorphic vector bundles in an integrated manner. It is aimed at graduate students who have had a thorough first year course in algebraic geometry (at the level of Hartshorne's ALGEBRAIC GEOMETRY), as well as more advanced graduate students and researchers in the areas of algebraic geometry, gauge thoery, or 4manifold topolgogy. Many of the results on vector bundles should also be of interest to physicists studying string theory. A novel feature of the book is its integrated approach to algebraic surface theory and the study of vector bundle theory on both curves and surfaces. While the two subjects remain separate through the first few chapters, and are studied in alternate chapters, they become much more tightly interconnected as the book progresses. Thus vector bundles over curves are studied to understand ruled surfaces, and then reappear in the proof of Bogomolov's inequality for stable bundles, which is itself applied to study canonical embeddings of surfaces via Reider's method. Similarly, ruled and elliptic surfaces are discussed in detail, and then the geometry of vector bundles over such surfaces is analyzed. Many of the results on vector bundles appear for the first time in book form, suitable for graduate students. The book also has a strong emphasis on examples, both of surfaces and vector bundles. There are over 100 exercises which form an integral part of the text

Gauge theory and the topology of fourmanifolds by
Robert Friedman(

12 editions published between 1997 and 1998 in English and held by 77 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The lectures in this volume provide a perspective on how 4manifold theory was studied before the discovery of modernday SeibergWitten theory. One reason the progress using the SeibergWitten invariants was so spectacular was that those studying SU(2)gauge theory had more than ten years' experience with the subject. The tools had been honed, the correct questions formulated, and the basic strategies well understood. The knowledge immediately bore fruit in the technically simpler environment of the SeibergWitten theory. Gauge theory long predates Donaldson's applications of the subject to 4

Smooth FourManifolds and Complex Surfaces by
Robert Friedman(
)
2 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 60 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book applies the recent techniques of gauge theory to study the smooth classification of compact complex surfaces. The study is divided into four main areas: Classical complex surface theory, gauge theory and Donaldson invariants, deformations of holomorphic vector bundles, and explicit calculations for elliptic sur§ faces. The book represents a marriage of the techniques of algebraic geometry and 4manifold topology and gives a detailed exposition of some of the main themes in this very active area of current research
