The report summarizes short-term studies on effects of ocean dumping in the New York Bight. The studies included hydrographic, geological, chemical, biological investigations, and a feasibility study for a remote-controlled electronic sensing system to detect the location and dump status of waste disposal vessels. Circulation patterns were estimated by current meters and by seabed and surface drifters. Chemical analyses were made of the concentration of phosphorus, nitrate, total iron, dissolved oxygen, and chlorophyll-a. Temperature, salinity, turbidity and pH were measured. Sediment samples were analyzed for organic content and the heavy metals; and biological samples for heavy metals and mercury. Included are studies of benthic meiofauna and macrofauna, zooplankton, finfish and bacteria and disposal of sewage sludge, dredge spoils and acid-iron wastes. Findings are presented and analyzed for impact on ecology, water quality, and total environmental effects. (Author)

The general purpose and reliability of bathymetric charts are discussed with regard to their usefulness in geological, geophysical, and oceanographical investigations. A short history is given of the bathymetric work around the Hawaiian Islands which has been conducted by the USC and GS and the U.S. Navy Hydrographic Office, and by other miscellaneous agencies, institutions, and individuals since the beginning of the century. All these sources of bathymetric information are listed in table form along with the date the work was completed and the area covered. A short discussion of the nearshore bathymetry of the island of Oahu is given as well as explanations on how the bathymetric charts were compiled, the scales that were used, the geographic datum, the sea level datum, the control of data, the possibility of errors, and the accuracy and reliability of bathymetric charts in general. Finally, a set of 11 photographically reduced charts is included to be used as an index, 10 of which show the nearshore bathymetry of Oahu, and one, the deep ocean bathymetry. (Author)

Verification Study of a Bathystrophic Storm Surge Model by George Pararas-Carayannis( Book )

A bathystrophic storm surge numerical model was verified, using data of historical hurricanes at selected traverses on the Gulf of Mexico and the east coast, by calibrating 'coupled' values of wind and bottom stress coefficients in hydrodynamic equations for the numerical computation. These coefficients represented model calibration constants that included more than the physical effects of wind and seabed friction. Surge hydrographs were calculated and compared with observed or recorded surge hydrographs of: (a) Hurricane of 1949 at Galveston and Freeport, Texas; (b) Hurricane Carla at Galveston and Freeport, Texas; (c) Hurricane Audrey at Eugene Island, Louisiana; (d) Hurricane Camille at Biloxi, Mississippi; and (e) Hurricane Carol at Narragansett Pier, Rhode Island. Comparisons were made with theoretical results for several hypothetical storm surge problems for which analytical solutions could be obtained. Although reasonable empirical solutions were obtained by combining values of initial rise and of coefficients of bottom friction and wind stress, the significance, variation and interdependence of these parameters could not be determined adequately because of limited historical data. Extrapolation of empirically derived wind stress and bottom friction relationships, as determined from lower windspeeds, to extreme probable maximum conditions associated with the synthetic hurricanes, could not be conclusively verified. Because of the complexity of the problem, data limitations, and the variability of different factors entering the calibration process, correlation for all historical hurricanes at all traverses was difficult to obtain

Theoretical time differences in the arrival of P-waves at different seismic stations around the Pacific were compiled and plotted by digital computer and by hand. Time-difference curves were plotted for each pair of seismic stations; such curves will allow the quick determination of earthquake epicenters. The following seismic stations were used in the compilations: Honolulu, Hawaii; Tucson, Arizona; Hong Kong; College, Alaska; and Sitka, Alaska. Included in this report is a modified version of the spherical hyperbola program that was used in the compilation. Travel-time difference charts are included as appendices for all combinations of the seismic stations listed above. (Author)
