Mary Wigman was a German dancer, choreographer, and dance instructor. A pioneer of expressionist dance, her work was hailed for bringing the deepest of existential experiences to the stage. As one of the most iconic figures of Weimar German culture, she is considered one of the most important figures in European dance history. Wigman's choreography often employed non-Western instrumentation, percussion as primary accompaniment, silence, masks, ecstatic spinning, and choral movement. She founded a school in Dresden, which existed from 1920 until 1942, at which she was a pioneer of modern stage dance (without pointe shoes), dance- and moving-pedagogy, and dance therapy

"This book, now in paper, is the final testament of a great creative artist, whose genius as a dancer and choreographer was well matched by her verbal gifts. In this volume, Walter Sorell, her longtime friend. brings together a rich selection of her writings: warm letters, poems, anecdotes of her early years, witty cartoons, essays on the art of dance, ad on some of her own works. Included in her reminiscences of her first compositions and performances, of the dancers who flocked to her company and school at Dresden, and of her triumphant American tours in 1930-1933." -- Back of book

Profile of Mary Wigman, a pioneer of German modern dance. This documentary explores the state of dance in her youth; her training at the Dalcroze School in Hellerau, and with Rudolf Laban in Ascona; her innovative choreography, with its emphasis on the expression of the human condition; the formation of her school, which was to train new generations of German dancers; her tours of the United States, and her influence there; her vicissitudes in Hitler's Germany; her perseverance in handing on her art to young dancers. Wigman herself is seen dancing in several solos: Witch dance [Hexentanz]; Seraphisches Lied (Seraphic song), Pastorale, and Sommerlicher Tanz from Swinging landscape [Schwingende Landschaft]; Totenmal; and Abschied und Dank, which she danced at her last public performance. Her dancers are seen in Wanderung [from Szenen aus einem Tanzdrama]; and her students Harald Kreutzberg, Dore Hoyer, and Susanne Linke are glimpsed in their own choreography
