Ecological psychology : creating a more earth-friendly human nature by George S Howard( Book )

7 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 331 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Our world now faces several ecological threats (e.g., global warming, ozone depletion, acid rain, deforestation, soil poisoning, water pollution, desertification) that could make life in the twenty-first century nightmarish. All of these threats are human produced. Thus, alterations in humans' thoughts, actions, and lifestyles must be important parts of the problems' solutions. The twin engines of ecological destruction are human overpopulation and overconsumption (i.e., unsustainable lifestyles). Both of these aspects of human nature are malleable to social/political and psychological interventions. Psychologists should become involved in dealing with impending ecological threats, since ecological degradation will be one of the leading causes of human pain and suffering in the next century

When things begin to go bad : narrative explorations of difficult issues( Book )

2 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 118 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"How does a person make sense of his or her life when things begin to go badly? Editors George Howard and Edward Delgado-Romero posed this question to several psychologists, counselors, and therapists, who responded with personal accounts of difficult times in their own lives. Their stories, collected here in When Things Begin to Go Bad, provide fresh insight into how writing personal narratives can help people make sense of adversity. Focused on hope rather than despair or darkness, these essays deal with issues including health problems, racism, homophobia, disability, dysfunction, and death. This volume has applications for psychological treatment and research, and represents a chance for people to relate their own stories to the stories of others."--BOOK JACKET

The Evaluation of Faculty Development Programs. Research Report No. 39 by Donald P Hoyt( Book )

1 edition published in 1977 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Literature pertinent to the evaluation of faculty development programs is reviewed and data are presented from several studies conducted at Kansas State University and Wichita State University. These data were consistent with those previously reported in that faculty participants consistently expressed satisfaction with development services. In addition, one study found that most faculty members voluntarily took some action to improve their instructional effectiveness, though only a minority pursued these efforts in depth. Volunteers who worked intensively with a faculty development consultant improved more on objective measures of effectiveness than did those who were only superficially involved in improvement efforts; those who received no consultative assistance failed to improve significantly. Evidence from a final study provided a control for faculty motivation and led to the conclusion that improvement was contingent both on faculty desire to improve and on the availability of professional assistance.
