Japanese financial markets and the role of the yen( Book )

2 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 193 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Radical shifts in the balance of global economic power and the growing instability of international financial markets have focused world attention on Japan: Japan is now the world's largest creditor and its greatest exporter of capital, and Japanese financial institutions are significant players in world financial markets. Japan's prominent role and its resilience to market turmoil raise questions about the characteristics of Japanese financial markets and institutions, and, more broadly, the future role of the yen in the international monetary system and the effects of Japanese financial deregulation on the countries of the Pacific. Japanese Financial Markets and the Role of the Yen details the major regulatory and non-regulatory changes that have occurred in Japanese financial markets over the past decade and explores their impact on the Japanese and world economies. How far has financial deregulation progressed in Japan, and what has been its impact on the implementation of Japanese monetary policy and the micro-structure of Japanese financial markets? What developments are likely to promote and inhibit the role of the yen in the international monetary system, and what costs and benefits will that bring? What has been the impact of Japanese financial deregulation, both internationally and in the Asia-Pacific region? The contributors to this volume, distinguished economists from throughout the region, address these and other issues from the perspective of Japan's role in the international economy
Asia Pacific regionalism : readings in international economic relations by Ross Garnaut( Book )

5 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 185 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Asia Pacific region has, in a relatively short space of time, become the hub of the world economy while at the same time moving towards closer economic integration. This book contains a selection of the articles that have emerged from analysis of the region over the last 20 years. The articles represent and convey the central ideas of Asia Pacific regionalism and describe the main historical, theoretical and political developments that they have grown from. Sections break the Asia-Pacific region into smaller areas, including the Americas, to look at causes, effects, problems and solutions in each. Also included is a chapter on the importance of Chinese reforms in an international context. This is an appropriate text for both students and lecturers

Challenges of economic reform and industrial growth : China's wool war( Book )

2 editions published between 1991 and 1992 in English and held by 77 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Trade wars over the supply of raw materials to the burgeoning manufacturing sector have been a feature of the 1980s in China. Challenges of Economic Reform and Industrial Growth provides a comprehensive case study of one of those wars - the war over the supply of wool into the textile industry. The book provides a powerful insight into the problems and challenges of economic reform and industrial growth in China. Comprehensive in its coverage of the origins and impacts of the wool war, the book argues that one of the driving forces behind the struggle over the distribution system is growth itself. Increasing incomes are changing the demand for household products and the book reports the shifts in household spending. Also highlighted are the linkages between changes in internal markets and the international trading system. It identifies changes in the management of China's trade and the effects of reform on China's capacity to import to meet domestic demands. An issue of special interest is the way the Chinese foreign exchange system works and its impact on the relative growth rates of various industries in China. Growth is also associated with shifts in the competitiveness of different sectors of the economy. Reported here are the results of one of the first computable general equilibrium models of China ever used to quantify the inter-sectoral impacts of reform. The agricultural sector in China is expected to decline and China is likely to become increasingly import dependent. This book explains why. China's textile exports had a major impact on world markets and the book identifies the sources of China's competitiveness in those products. The environmental impacts of reforms have been a major issue and this study documents the crisis in pastoral areas of China
