Knowledge and the body-mind problem : in defence of interaction by Karl R Popper( Book )

26 editions published between 1994 and 2013 in English and held by 583 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

One of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century, Sir Karl Popper here examines the problems connected with human freedom, creativity, rationality and the relationship between human beings and their actions. In this illuminating series of papers, Popper suggests a theory of mind-body interaction that relates to evolutionary emergence, human language and what he calls "the three worlds." Rene; Descartes first posited the existence of two worlds--the world of physical bodies and the world of mental states. Popper argues for the existence of "world 3" which comprises the products of our human minds. He examines the interaction between mental states--hopes, needs, plans, ideologies or hypotheses--and the physical states of our brain. Popper forcefully argues against the materialism forwarded by many philosophers which denies the existence of mental states. Instead, he demonstrates that the problem of the interaction between mental and physical states remains unresolved. Knowledge and the Body-Mind Problem is based on Popper's never-before published lectures at Emory University in 1969. Popper has extensively revised the lectures but has retained their accessible format. He has also incorporated some of the discussions which followed the lectures, providing an engaging exchange between the philosopher and his audience

Science and the open society : the future of Karl Popper's philosophy by Mark Amadeus Notturno( Book )

18 editions published between 1999 and 2001 in English and held by 240 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Science and the Open Society is a clearly argued and easy to read defense of Karl Popper's philosophy by Dr. Mark Notturno, the man whom Popper chose to research and edit his archives. The author argues that Popper's ideas about science and open society are still largely misunderstood in the west, but are now more important than ever in providing inspiration for the people in Central and Eastern Europe and Middle Asia who are struggling to open up their closed societies."--Jacket

Hayek and Popper : on rationality, economism, and democracy by Mark Amadeus Notturno( Book )

11 editions published between 2014 and 2018 in English and held by 129 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Karl Popper and Friedrich von Hayek are remembered as two of the twentieth century's greatest proponents of open society. However, over the years, Hayek's ideas have tended to be favoured over Popper's in both academic and political discussions. This book aims to improve understanding of Popper's and Hayek's philosophies by explaining their differences, and whilst doing so, to encourage liberal political philosophers to take a better-informed and more sympathetic look at Popper's ideas about open society. Popper and Hayek differed in subtle but fundamental ways about rationality, economism, and democracy. They thus differed about whether and to what extent society is well served by deliberate attempts at social engineering and government intervention in the economy. They also differed about whether democracy is better served by institutions designed to elect the best leaders, or by institutions designed to protect us against the leaders we elect. And they differed, perhaps most importantly, about whether we should value freedom as a means to prosperity or an end-in-itself. This book argues that Hayek's views about rationality, economism, and democracy are fundamentally at odds with Popper's 3/4 and perhaps even with open society itself ... and that the unintended consequences of Hayek's views may actually pose a threat to Popper's vision of a liberal and free open society ... Indukcija in razmejitev by Mark Amadeus Notturno( )

1 edition published in 1997 in Slovenian and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

2 editions published in 2019 in Hungarian and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Az amerikai filozófus a "nyitott társadalom" misszionáriusa, egy időben Sir Karl Popper barátja és munkatársa volt, munkásságának értő tolmácsolója. Ebben a könyvében a Popperrel nagyon sok mindenben azonos gondolati úton járó filozófus, Popper barátja, Friedrich von Hayek gondolataival veti össze Popper nézeteit, több helyen idézve levelezésüket. Az alcímben jelölt fogalmak mentén, a racionalitás, az ökonomizmus és a demokrácia hayeki és popperi értelmezéseit egybevetve a szerző arra a megállapításra jut, hogy Popper nézetei - mivel hitt a racionális, fokozatos kormányzati beavatkozás lehetőségében, a szabadságot önmagáért tartotta fontosnak, még akkor is ha egy másik rendszer, pl. a szükségszerűen totalitáriussá fejlődő szocializmus termelékenyebbnek is bizonyulna és mivel a demokrácia lehetővé teszi a zsarnokság elkerülését - Hayek e téren eltérő gondolataival szemben előnyben részesítendők. A Soros György előszavával ellátott könyvet a politikai filozófiákban jártas olvasóknak érdemes ajánlani

Democratic nation building : an Interactivity Foundation citizen staff work report presenting policy possibilities for public discussion( Book )

1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This Interactivity Foundation report describes eight of such concepts pertaining to democratic nation-building which resulted from discussions of two panels which met in Washington, D.C. on a monthly basis from July 2009 through July 2010. Many Americans believe that the democratic values of the United States are universal and self-evident truths, and that our national mission is to spread democracy abroad. However, the international climate, which once welcomed such efforts, has become increasingly unable to define its expectations of applied democracy
