Managing interactions in the e-learning environment : technological support for academic staff by N Islam( )

3 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Over the last two decades the use of e-learning technology increased to such an extent that the role of the traditional academic has been forced to change. Focusing on academics’ views, this study examines their interactions in the e-learning environment and whether online learning applications have increased academic workload (Eynon, 2005; Olaniran, 2006). This study also identifies how their role has changed and the underlying factors which may cause negativity in their working environment. This understanding then generated the theory behind a prototype application, produced to be an addition to the current tools that academics use, with the intention to reduce academic efforts in creating content for teaching.Based on literature review, twelve interviews with academics and analysis of participant transaction logs suggests that online learning applications have increased workload. For some academics the use of e-learning technology in UK higher education can be a full time occupation. It is evident from the data that the drawbacks to current e-learning technology outweigh the number of benefits. A key concern is the high number of hours which are being spent on e-learning systems by academics. This research states unequivocally that the level of complexity for some academics is daunting, as well as frustrating. This study argues that managing expectations of academic staff is vital to the success of e-learning systems.A web-based prototype application was developed to extend the current functionality of e-learning systems, with a key objective to decrease the time spent by academics on e- learning activities; functionality which has not yet been incorporated by other e-learning platforms such as Blackboard or Moodle. The prototype was tested by three academics who agreed that their overall experience was positive, effective and beneficial. Most importantly, they believed that the application would reduce the number of hours they spent on e-learning activities

A mechanism for combining data analysis algorithms with databases on the internet by N Islam( Book )

2 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "It is probably justified to call our era as the information age. Presently giga and tera bytes of information are stored across the internet and the intranets. The acquisition of information however, can only make sense if it is accompanied by tools and methods that organize and support the effortless and accurate requisition. Although current data analysis systems provide the means for information retrieval and knowledge discovery, they operate on limited capacity in the sense that each such system is designed and used in conjunction with only a few and in most of the cases just one database. In this paper, we present an open architecture for combining arbitrarily and securely on the Internet both the data analysis algorithms and the databases even if their vendors or suppliers are different. We also present a payment protocol which the users, the algorithm and the database suppliers may use to negotiate and agree on the services provided."
Algorithms for communication compilation for unreliable networks by N Islam( Book )

2 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "Networks of workstations (NOW) are becoming a popular environment for running parallel applications. However, parallel applications running on top of generic network protocols (e.g. TCP) in a NOW environment often do not perform as well as one would expect. Research shows that the performance of parallel applications depends on the performance of the underlying network protocols. Generic network protocols guarantee reliable message delivery but add unnecessary overheads that degrade the performance of parallel applications. Communication compilation is an automatic technique for generating efficient application- specific network protocols. In this paper, we discuss algorithms for communication compilation which use knowledge of a parallel application's communication and computation behavior to generate optimized network protocols that guarantee the reliable delivery of messages. The resulting network protocols are more efficient than conventional communication libraries used in current NOW environments."
