5 editions published between 1968 and 1969 in English and held by 1,056 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Three essays reflect the exploratory nature of Religion and Personality -- a field still in its infancy in divinity studies. Each of the eleven authors applies the insights of psychology, both theoretical and clinical, to important elements of Christian thought and religious meaning. New light is shed on such central concepts as faith, guilt and salvation. The relation between belief and myth is defined, and the old controversy about demythologization receives fresh impetus

The Edge of the ghetto : a study of church involvement in community organization by John Hall Fish( Book )

1 edition published in 1966 in English and held by 70 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This research document reports on the involvement of several local Protestant and Roman Catholic churches with a mass community organization in a racially changing area of Chicago. The corporate participation of churches in this social and political experiment and others of its kind has been the subject of much controversy. The research is an inquiry into the interaction between churches and the community organization, and into the meaning of this interaction for the participants. It describes the founding and development of the Organization for the Southwest Community (osc); the characteristics of several church parishes in the southwest Chicago area and how they participated in the osc; and the attitudes of church members toward the involvement of their church in the osc. An appendix describes research methods and theoretical framework, and includes the questionnaire on attitudes. (Author/mf)
A call to civil society : why democracy needs moral truths : a report to the nation from the Council on Civil Society by New York, NY Institute for American Values( Book )

4 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 62 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report states there are at least 12 seedbeds of civic virtue considered to be the foundational sources of competence, character, and citizenship. The report also claims that the decline of these qualities is cause for weakening morality and the endangerment of continuing self-governance; and as the social morality deteriorates, life becomes harsher and less civil for everyone, and social problems multiply. The report states the primary challenge for the United States is the moral renewal of the democracy through three proposed goals: (1) to increase the likelihood that more children will grow up with their two married parents; (2) to adopt a new "civil society model" for evaluating public policies and solving social problems; and (3) to revitalize a shared civic story informed by moral truth. A strategy for renewal is given that outlines 41 recommendations to the family, community, religious institutions, voluntary civic organizations, the arts and art institutions, local government, primary and secondary education, higher education, business, labor, and economic institutions, and media institutions. A shared civic faith, a common civic purpose, and a public moral philosophy also are recommended. (Lb)

Heresy, treason, and royal prerogative : Henry VIII and the plenitude of power by Darnell Maurice Charles( )

1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As Protestant Reformations were heating up on the European continent in 1539 and English reformers were eager to import ideas into the realm for the reform of the English Church, King Henry VIII took many of his most trusted advisors by surprise, forcing a traditional religious settlement through Parliament. The Six Articles effectively preserved many of the features of traditional Western Christianity. Scholars have offered a number of justifications for this action, from the modest rationale that Henry simply forced his own piety on an increasingly divided nation, to the more cynical view that Henry manipulated religious dogma and practice for the sole purpose of currying favor with the leaders of traditional Catholic countries. Most scholars treat it as a footnote to English Reformation historiography. This study places it at the center, as it sheds light on Henry's and his advisors' role in fashioning a monarch in the mold of the Christian emperor who guards the church with the sword, ensures orthodoxy, and corrects the immorality of the clergy for the good of the realm. This study is important for understanding the English Reformation in general and sacral kingship in particular because it demonstrates how law, ritual, and theology were employed in late medieval and early modern Europe to legitimate, represent, and resist political power. This study examines the complex relationship between the semi-clerical personage of the healing body of the king, the Body of Christ in the sacrament of the Altar, and the sacerdotal priesthood. With priesthood came the power to anoint kings, confect sacraments, offer sacrifices for the forgiveness of sins, and represent the state affairs through, for example, ratifying treaties by means of ritual performance. By examining legal statutes, polemical theological writings, diaries, and historical sources gathered by Henry's scholars in the service of establishing royal supremacy over the papacy in ecclesiastical affairs, this study reveals the political significance of theological critiques raised by non-traditional reformers, thereby elucidating the necessity of fashioning a theologically robust monarchy independent of the papacy
