Frustration theory : an analysis of dispositional learning and memory by Abram Amsel( Book )

14 editions published between 1992 and 2006 in English and held by 343 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

We live in a world in which inconsistency is the rule rather than the exception and this is particularly true for rewards and frustrations. In some cases, rewards and frustrative non-rewards appear randomly for what seems to be the same behaviour; in others a sequence of rewards is suddenly followed by non-rewards, or large rewards by small rewards. The important common factor in these and other cases is frustration - how we learn about it and how we respond to it. This book provides a basis in learning theory and particularly in frustration theory, for a comprehension not only of the mechanisms controlling these dispositions, but also of their order of appearance in early development and, to an approximation at least, their neural underpinnings

The effect of anxiety state upon intra-serial interference in rote learning of nonsense syllables by Abram Amsel( )

2 editions published in 1946 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Because anxiety is a term which is used in a variety of contexts, a definition of it, as used in this paper, is necessary. Warren's Dictionary of Psychology defines anxiety as "an emotional attitude or sentiment concerning the future, characterized by an unpleasant mingling of dread and hope". MacKinnon (1944) writes that anxiety occupies the intermediate position in the series of prospective emotions made up of confidence, hope, anxiety, despondency and despair. Mowrer (1939) defines anxiety as anticipation of painfully intense stimulation. Masserman (1944) sees anxiety as "a diffuse, pervading apprehensiveness without specific or clearly recognized (conscious) reality referents". Billings (1939) regards it as "a feeling of uneasiness and an unpleasant expectancy of something about to happen without a certainty of its coming to pass". According to Kubie (1941), anxiety is "a protective anticipatory signal for the outbreak of the startle state". For Young (1943) the term anxiety designates a persistent state in which there is a foreboding of evil". In all of the foregoing definitions there is one common element. This is denoted by the words: concerning the future, prospective emotion, anticipation, apprehensiveness, expectancy and foreboding. In each case anxiety is seen as an uneasy feesling about what is to come. This idea is fundamental to a definition of anxiety and on this point there is general agreement. ..."--
