Teacher education in America : reform agendas for the twenty-first century by Christopher J Lucas( Book )

11 editions published between 1997 and 1999 in English and German and held by 805 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Teacher Education in America includes an illuminating account of the history of teacher education in the United States and provides a thought-provoking analysis of the major issues and problems surrounding teacher preparation. Christopher Lucas reveals the traditional four-year undergraduate programs - as well as the short-term "alternative" teacher certification routes - to be largely insufficient to the needs of teachers entering the nation's schools. In addition, he studies and critiques the so-called field-based models that have been touted as the wave of the future. Concluding with a thoughtful assessment of what may lie ahead, Lucas offers a challenging and provocative new direction for teacher education reform for the twenty-first century

The roots of controversy surrounding higher education in the United States extend deep into the past. This fresh, incisive history provides needed perspective on current debates over such educational issues as access, costs, academic quality, social equity, and curricula. The fundamental crisis facing academe in the United States today, the author argues, derives from the enduring confusion over the meaning and purpose of higher learning itself. Eminently readable and always lively, this timely historical account is sure to prove itself an invaluable resource for assessing the present condition and future prospects of American colleges and universities
Crisis in the academy : rethinking higher education in America by Christopher J Lucas( Book )

18 editions published between 1996 and 1998 in English and German and held by 686 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Not since student turmoil and unrest wreaked havoc on the nation's campuses three decades ago has American higher education been the subject of so much controversy and popular criticism. Vital issues confronting today's institutions of higher learning include: admissions, student enrollment management, curricular fragmentation, declining academic standards, the apparent erosion of liberal learning within academe, neglect of undergraduate education in favor of academic research, unprecedented financial woes, shifting campus priorities, faculty tenure, the "publish or perish" syndrome, and renewed demands for accountability. Confusion over fundamental priorities and purposes, the author argues, lies at the heart of the dilemma facing end-of-the-century higher education. Having failed in its attempt to be all things to all people, the academy must now reinvent itself to meet the challenges of the millennium ahead. Thoughtful and timely, Crisis in the Academy offers a wide-ranging analysis of contemporary higher education and makes an important contribution to the ongoing public debate over the future of America's beleaguered and diverse institutions of higher learning

This book provides a fascinating and important history of foreign students in American higher education. Lucas is a well-established Palgrave author with a good sales track who commands respect within academia. His first book with us, "American Higher Education: A History", has sold 8,126 copies with a second edition that published this year. New Faculty has sold 4,412 paperback copies as of 2006. Not since 1970 (Clarke and Ozawa, The Foreign Student in the United States) has there been a detailed treatment of this topic and sufficient time has elapsed to warrant a fresh, new analysis containing current, up-to-date information. Today more than 3,560 institutions of post-secondary learning in the US currently maintain staff to regulate foreign student admissions and enrollments, with approximately 8,900 field practitioners attending to the overseeing of these students. Plato's academy was the first formal arena for education, where young men were tutored in the rigors of logic, philosophy, and mathematics. Prior to this, societies transmitted knowledge from one generation to the next orally, and after the advent of writing, through texts. Although education throughout history has been predominantly a privilege of the elite, universal education is currently seen as a basic right, necessary for a country's prosperity. This program traces the evolution of education through the ages, from oral traditions to its role in today's ever changing society, where the need to learn new job skills is a constant necessity

This module (part of a series of 24 modules) is on the basic intent of foundational studies in teacher education. The genesis of these materials is in the 10 "clusters of capabilities," outlined in the paper, "a Common Body of Practice for Teachers: The Challenge of Public Law 94-142 to Teacher Education." These clusters form the proposed core of professional knowledge needed by teachers in the future. The module is to be used by teacher educators to reexamine and enhance their current practice in preparing classroom teachers to work competently and comfortably with children who have a wide range of individual needs. The module includes objectives, scales for assessing the degree to which the identified knowledge and practices are prevalent in an existing teacher education program, and self-assessment test items. Journal articles are included on standards for academic instruction in foundations of education, a national assessment of foundations of education, and the foundational education component in regulations governing teacher education and certification.
